For many years I have had an Epson 1270 A3 photo printer. Over the years it has printed some superb A3 photos and Templot track plans. But it has always been temperamental -- reporting errors, occasionally stopping in mid-print, refusing to start, making funny noises. I obtained the best-quality printer cable I could find, and installed it on several different systems. Nothing made any difference. It always compared very unfavourably with my trusty 11-year-old HP 720C which has performed faultlessly always -- I can't remember a single error or problem with the 720C, it is still going strong and used daily. Earlier this week the 1270 was so bad that I finally lost temper with it, and it was on its way to the skip. Then I noticed on the back of it something which I had not noticed before (or forgotten) -- a USB socket. When I first obtained this printer USB was in its infancy and I have always used old-type parallel printer cables. So before finally chucking it out I thought it would be worth trying it with a USB cable. Amazing. Transformation. I have now been using it for several days without a single error or problem. I can't believe it. When I remember all the time I've wasted over the years messing about with it I could kick myself for not trying this before. So I thought I would pass on this tip for anyone having similar problems. An A3 inkjet is a very handy thing to have for Templot, and it prints superb quality photos too. Unfortunately as far as I can find there is no driver for Vista or Win7, so this is XP only. regards, Martin. |

Hi Martin I was thinking about buying one of these a while ago, but decided that if I was going to go bigger then I'd go to A2 (which I haven't yet!) Anyway, Windows 7 lists "Epson Stylus Photo 1270 ESC/P 2" as one of the available drivers in the "Add printer" dialogue (click on Windows Update and go for a cup of coffee whilst the list updates). I'm using an almost equally old Canon i850 which is on its 3rd head, and using the MS drivers is the only option with Windows 7. Talking of HP printers, I have an HP Laserjet 4M Plus made in March 1994 which is still going strong, and again using MS drivers for Win7. I wish modern HP printers were as reliable. (Thinking about the number of times I've sworn at the one I use at work!) Cheers |

Unfortunately it's not listed on my Windows 7/64 system, and attempting to connect the printer produces "driver not found". It seems I need to use Windows Update to get this driver, which I can't do because I'm keeping my Windows 7 system as a clean stand-alone for development work, and not ever connecting it to the internet. Fortunately I don't need a physical printer on there. I've installed Snagit 10 which includes an excellent virtual printer. But it's good that a Windows 7 driver is available for the 1270, so thanks for reporting this. regards, Martin. |

is there anything posted on Epson's own site? I've a 1290 (almost as old, and running faultlessly for 10yrs on USB) and even updating to OSX10.7 there were still drivers and management software available. BTw if any one is in the market for one of these I have a spare 1290 (due to portfolio work now being outsourced and soft proofing no longer approved of at work). Apologies for piggy backing but as a cheap means of getting A3 they are useful long lived pieces of equipment. |

I have to say that my 1290 struggled on a printer cable but as Martin found out with his 1270 the difference was quite amazing when using a USB cable. It does however throw the odd wobbly, just to keep me on my toes. I bought it slightly after getting Templot so that I could print an entire template on one bit of paper. Cheers Phil |
