Hi All,

I’m having a problem getting timbers back (restored) onto diamond crossing halves (or to be more precise quarters).

I have been doing a re-write of Richard_t’s irregular diamond crossing help guide, in the hope of finally producing a video of this.
So have had to make sure of every little detail is correct and have put down the description of every step required.

From the start, all templates were (are) done with timbers omitted.

In very simplistic terms, the crossing starts with two curves of different radii, which cross each other at some point.
Then for each half of the crossing, two turnouts are setup and adjusted to give correct alignment of what becomes the main road and the diagonal road. One of these turnouts is copied to provide the crossing vee on that side.
The two full turnouts are then copied and converted in turn to half diamonds, but only the aligned roads are used in each case, the other parts are omitted, thus resulting in a quarter diamond template.
The above is then repeated for the other half of the diamond crossing.

The final result is an irregular diamond crossing with no timbering.

Now when I come to try to put timbers down, I find that for each of the quarter diamonds, I cannot get the timbers restored, all boxes are greyed out and restore timbers can’t be accessed.

The only way I can add timbers to the crossing is by selecting each of the single vee’s (which are still in essence, turnouts) on either side of the formation.
When I do this I get all timbers restored for both vee’s, but find that I have to adjust the spacing of the timbers which is uneven on the two sides of the diamond.
Also the timbers are lopsided and require throwing to get anywhere near to central.

Now I was hoping that by using the timbers of each half of the diamond, although not quite the same size, that the final result would be a more even and balanced look to the timbers.

However, as stated above this option does not appear to be available to me.
It seems that if you copy a turnout without timbers, and convert it to a half diamond, then reduce that to only one road partial template, e.i. Main road stock rail, main road crossing rail and main road check rail only with no vee or diagonal road parts, then timbers cannot be restored on this quarter diamond !!

I’ve attached a box file showing the resulting irregular diamond without timbers.
You may not that I have also placed a simple regular diamond crossing just above the irregular one to give an idea of how the timbers should look when added.

Has anyone any ideas as to how I can restore the timbers to the quarter diamond’s (or at least to one quarter each side of the diamond).

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Hi Brian,

Click the real > timbering > equalized constant menu item.

You currently have no timbering set. :)

However, there does seem to be something not quite right with this for half-diamonds -- I will look into it.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for the prompt response.

That worked a treat.  :thumb:

All timbers present and correct, makes life a little easier. :)

Again I suspected it must be finger trouble on my part, although it was not quite clear what should be done in this case.

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Bug fixed in the next Pug.

Bug warning in 091c:

Starting the shove timbers function offers to restore normal settings if the control template is currently set for no timbering. But this does not work if the control template is a half-diamond. The workaround is to click the real > timbering > equalized-constant menu item yourself. (This is the only timbering style available for half-diamond templates.)

Note that the omit all button on the shove timbers dialog should not be used to omit all the timbers. It is intended to be used only as a precursor to restoring just a few of them -- i.e. a quicker method than individually omitting the majority of timbers.

To remove all the timbers from a template, click the real > timbering > no timbering menu item.

Note that these timber style settings are radio group items in the menu. If you don't know what that means, please see:  message 8805

(I'm going to have to include the above line in a lot of the help notes -- what I had always assumed to be common Windows knowledge has turned out not to be the case.)

regards,

Martin.
