Hi All, (particularly Martin)

When placing a turnout, which is in the control, onto a plain track background template using the following instructions:

Left click on the plain track background template, (or using Shift key + Left click on it’s name label)
then selecting
< peg/align tools >
< align control template over, and snake onto peg >
                                                                                             < facing – trailing >
from the popup menu.
I find that the control turnout template swaps hand (from say, Left-Hand to Right-Hand) when it akigns with the end of the plain track background template.

This kept happening, after several frustrating attempts at removing and re-handing the turnout, and then re-trying to align again.

Each and every time it swapped the hand of the turnout template to the wrong hand that was required.

I finally decided to try another tack and did the following:

Left click on the plain track background template, (or using Shift key + Left click on it’s name label)
then selecting
< peg/align tools >
< align control template over, and snake onto peg >
                                                                                              < facing – trailing >
from the popup menu.
And then again,

Left click on the plain track background template, (or using Shift key + Left click on it’s name label)
then selecting
< peg/align tools >
< align control template over, and snake onto peg >
                                                                                              < facing – trailing >
from the popup menu.
In other words, I did the align action twice without removing the turnout template in between, and as I suspected, on the first application of alignment it swapped to the wrong hand, but when I did the second alignment application, it swapped back to the correct required hand.
I could then continue to do the snake operation to place the turnout exactly where I needed it.

Now the strange thing about all of this is, the if you select to align using < facing – facing > the control turnout template remains at the correct handing and does not change.

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same problem, and why this change of handing should have occurred only under the < facing – trailing > condition ?

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Hi Brian,

It's not a problem, it's by design. :)

When you do swap facing-trailing (CTRL+N), Templot inverts the handing so that the MS main side and TS turnout side remain as before on the template.

If that's not what you want, you just press CTRL+X to invert the handing.

template > swap facing-trailing or template swap end-for-end (different names for the same thing, CTRL+N),

and template > invert handing (CTRL+X), are two of the most frequently used commands.

For those who can't remember the shortcuts or where they are in the menus, I have added those functions to the new "beginner-buttons" :

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for the very prompt and again detailed response.

I understand what you have written about the methods of changing hand on a turnout and changing facing – trailing, but I’m not sure it has answered my question.

I cannot understand why when you use the dropdown menu when trying to align over and snake onto peg, as shown again below:

Left click on the plain track background template, (or using Shift key + Left click on it’s name label)
then selecting
< peg/align tools >
< align control template over, and snake onto peg >
                                                                                              < facing – trailing >
from the popup menu.
The hand of the template should change hand for no reason.

As I see it, whether you are using < facing – trailing > or < facing – facing > to align and snake onto the plain track section, the hand of the turnout should not change, particularly since one would have pre-selected it (including the required handing) from the template <new template  (CNTRL + Q ) > menu, or copied it from another previous turnout template in readiness to use.

Sorry about the possible confusion.

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Hi Brian,

Well maybe you're right. :)

The align over function first does facing-facing, and then if you opted for facing-trailing it does an end-swap (which always inverts the handing). But since it is so quick to invert it back if required it has never occurred to me to be a problem. Just dab CTRL+X and it's back how you wanted it.

I'm not inclined to change it because that behaviour is well established and expected by experienced users. But it perhaps needs an explanatory note for beginners.

Try holding down CTRL+X for a few seconds on a curved turnout to see how quick and easy it is to invert the handing. After that you will probably not think it worth bothering to pre-set a specific hand before aligning. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for the quick response.

Apologies for pushing the point, but it did cause initial concern as to why it was happening, again I thought it might have been me not setting things up correctly.

However, now that you have fully explained it, and since I am aware of the problem, it is a you say, not worth the time and effort in changing it.

I have been working with the problem (using the swap functions) for the last few days and getting the right result, however, I’m afraid curiosity got the better of me today and I just had to ask the question.

Many thanks again for the answers.

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.
