Richard T asked for a quick recipe for using a gaunt turnout in a 3-way tandem turnout.

This was one reason for introducing gaunt turnouts -- for use as a partial template forming the middle crossing in a 3-way turnout (tandem or three-throw types).

Note that in many cases you may find using an irregular half-diamond template gives better results and is easier to adjust than a gaunt turnout.

Here's a quick guide to using a gaunt turnout in a tandem:

(Templot2 only)

1. Put the notch on the rail intersection for the middle vee in the usual way.*

With a new turnout control template:

2. F5 to set the crossing angle to a guess, say 1:5 for a typical double-sided tandem.

3. real > V-crossing options > curviform V-crossing. (These are new quicker-access menu items.) Don't forget this step.

4. template > gaunt options > gaunt turnout. This puts the peg on CTRL-4 for you, so don't do it again (otherwise the peg angle will swap to the turnout road in the usual way).

5. peg the template onto the notch.

6. CTRL-X as necessary to match the required hand.

7. F6 to adjust the main road curving to match the underlying rails. Zoom in as necessary. Ignore the turnout road rails.

8. Zoom in close on the peg. F9 to adjust the nose of vee to the required angle. Just the tip of the vee, ignore the rails beyond.

9. Zoom back out a bit to see the whole crossing. SHIFT-F12 gaunt offset mouse action to adjust the turnout radius to match the underlying rails. For the greatest accuracy you may want to repeat F9 and SHIFT-F12 again.

10. do > blank up to V-crossing or CTRL-F3 mouse action, and F4, to set the length to just contain the check rails, in the usual way.

11. omit the stock rails in the usual way.

12. INSERT key.
(store & background, new shortcut, CTRL-V still works. There is also a new top tool-button, showing double down-arrows).

* peg on crossing rail, CTRL-F8 to position it, notch under peg.

regards,

Martin.
