Dear all,

Here is an interesting picture. Notice the catch points in the foreground -- the turnout rail is chaired on alternate timbers only. The only reason I can think for this is simply economy of chair castings. This may be a one-off for this location (Newmarket) or maybe typical of GER / LNER practice generally -- anyone know?

This is actually a still from a Movietone newsreel showing (allegedly?) the last working shunting horse on BR, filmed on 27th Feb 1967. You can watch the full movie clip at:

Martin.

For those interested in 1 H.P. 0-4-0 shunters, further footage of the class (this time in colour) may be downloaded free from the site of Movietone's rival, British Pathe.

Go to: http://www.britishpathe.com/
Press: Advanced
in Film ID:, enter: 287.05
Press: Go
Use: Preview Stills OR Download Video

Latter, after free enrolment, will email you a download URL valid for 7 days. Note that this particular free clip is truncated after 2min 8sec. It's dated 23/08/1964.

Regards,

Rodney Hills
