Hi Folks, When I have drawn a crossover on top of my 40ft/1 inch survey background, how can I check what the track centres measure? Is it possible in Templot to measure on screen from one place to another like a CAD programme? Bob |

Hi Paul, I was wondering about Tools - Ruler but couldn't see how it works. (I have unhidden ruler). |

Hello: Try alt-left click to set one end of the ruler and alt-right click for the other end. | ||

Hi Bob. Although the ruler can be useful for measuring track centres, an alternative approach is to turn on the adjacent tracks function which will apply to the Control template. In 0.91c this can be found under the Generator > Generator settings > Adjacent tracks. The default in this version is to show all four rails ie both Turnout side and Main side, this can be changed with the "Adjacent tracks rail options". The spacing settings can be altered by selecting Geometry > Adjacent track centres and entering the new dimensions for the Turnout side and Main side independently. A degree of trial and error will be needed with this method. To turn this function off again go Generator > Generator settings > No adjacent lines. Tony. |

Hi Tony, The muddy waters start to clear... Firstly I had the Generator settings function turned off (not knowing it was there). Secondly, I was expecting the track centre dimensions shown in the control template information box to rise or fall with my moving of the template. I now see your method here creates trace lines alongside which can be matched to existing work. Always more to discover... Thank you Tony, Bob |

It's now at geometry > adjacent options > adjacent rails as guide lines menu option. Also this setting is now template-specific and saved in the .box file. If you wish you can therefore now keep a selection of such templates in the file with different spacings, solely for use as design aids. Use the align functions to align them over existing templates. However, it is no longer possible to switch each rail on and off independently. I didn't see any real need for this. However you can in effect turn one side off by setting the centre spacing to zero. (Or you can when I have fixed a bug -- at present set the spacing to 0.01 mm. )There is now a single switch in the generator -- generator settings > adjacent features menu item. This controls generation of not only these guide rails but also the platforms and trackbed edges. regards, Martin. |

Hi bob. As you say, there is indeed always more to discover. Up till now I was unaware of the Alt click options with the ruler and that is a very useful trick. I have been zooming out to find the ruler and laboriously moving the ends with the mouse previously! (Memo to self, read the help screens more often.) As you have probably discovered by now, having the adjacent tracks on produces lots of lines on the screen which gets confusing as to which belongs to what, so this option needs to to used sparingly. Although the adjacent tracks appear to be stored as part of the background templates, they will not be saved like that when you finish your session and save all. The other trick to be aware of is that slight adjustments (and I do mean slight 0.1 mm or less) to the track spacing can be very useful in aligning the timbers across two roads. Tony. |

Personally I have tended to just turn on the nearest rail for which ever side I am working on when adjusting centres (0.78e), I am still getting to grips with the changes in 0.91c, but I guess I can live with all four.
