I am getting on well with Templot and have managed to create some quite complicated turnouts with the help of Martin (thanks for the half scissors - that worked fine) and help from other super-users.

However, there are two things which constantly trip me up.
Firstly, whenever you do anything which involves <store and background>, you end up with a duplicated template on the screen.  I do not understand why the program is designed to do this?
If I read the tutorial it says <just delete the lowermost one>, but I am scared of deleting something that I want.  At the moment I tend to open the storage box and wipe from background and then delete it, but that is time consuming (but safe).
If I do just use the delete function, is there a restore function if I accidentally delete something important?

The second problem I have is with labels.  I move these to one side of track or a turnout, but after doing some more work I always find they have changed their position again - usually right into the middle of the turnout where I cannot read them.  Why do the labels move from the position I put them in, or is there a setting I need to change?

Thanks
Arthur

Hi Arthur

It's good to see you getting on with Templot - so many people seem to give up when they don't get instant results.
Firstly, whenever you do anything which involves <store and background>, you end up with a duplicated template on the screen.
No, you don't!  When you store the control template to the background, what you get is the background template with the control superimposed and visible.  Perhaps you could explain in more detail exactly how you're getting duplicate templates? Are you definitely sure they are duplicated and you're not seeing the background and control templates?

This system makes working with partial templates very fast as you keep working with effectively the same control and building the background template up in little chunks (such as you may be doing with your half-scissors!)

If I read the tutorial it says <just delete the lowermost one>, but I am scared of deleting something that I want.
...but having said that, it is possible to end up with duplicate templates if you store twice, but you usually know when you've done that (he says!!).  You're on the right track with wiping if you're not sure, but I don't normally delete wiped templates as I go along - every now and then I go through the storage box and tidy them in one go.  There isn't, as far as I know, a way of restoring deleted templates one they've gone from the storage box.

Labels - I just turn them all off :)  I can see what the template is without having a label to tell me!  Sorry, that probably doesn't help you.  Yes, they do move around, and yes it can be irritating at times, but it's dead easy to move them:- click, or Shift-click on the template then press L then the label will move with the mouse.

Hi Paul,

On the storage box, edit > undo delete menu item.

But only the most recently deleted template is available to undo.

Martin.

Hi Paul and Martin
I agree with your comment that I am getting a control and a background template superimposed (not two background templates unless I store and background twice), which I guess has to happen as Templot always has a control template, so can never just have just background templates on your screen.
Thanks for reminding me of the keyboard shortcut for moving labels. That is a good one to remember.

Martin - Thanks for telling me about the undo function after a delete. I have made a note of this.
Is there any explanation as to why the labels move? Normally I am like Paul and turn them off, but when building up a complex piece of track I find it useful to keep the labels on.

best wishes to your both
Arthur

Hi Arthur,

The control template has a name (shown in the info panel) but it doesn't have a label. When you delete a background template to the control, the label position information is lost. When you store the control template, a new random position for the label is created.

It's best to leave the labels in the random positions while working, and tidy them into neat positions when finished. If they are a nuisance you can hide them quickly simply by dabbing the END key on and off.

You can quickly bat a single label out of the way by clicking bat name label on the menu. (SHIFT-click on the label and then press B -- repeat as required.)

regards,

Martin.

Thanks Martin
It would be great if the system could memorise the old position (in v3.xxx?), but at least I now know that I am not doing something silly.
all the best,
Arthur
