Back in 2008 after a holiday next to the Festiniog railway I hankered after building a small narrow gauge layout, Based on UK stock and not using small sleepered crazy track. In 0-16.5

After a few trials, I want to use 0 gauge wooden sleepers, using either code 75 BH or 82 FB rail or like the Festiniog a mixture of both, using 00 plastic chairs. Finescale 00 wheels so it could be either 00 or 00-SF gauge

I do have a copy of  WHR / Festinog turnout (see thread topic 578) but its just too large for a small layout.

The questions are

1 What would be a reasonable size turnout so its not too big but on the other hand does not look like a crazy track turnout.

2 What would be a good sleeper spacing when I set up my own spec in the scale/gauge section and any other usefull advice when inputting data in this section.

Thanks in advance and any other advice would be most welcome.

Hi John,

There are some sample turnouts for 0n14 and 0n16.5 to get you started here:

topic 28

0n30_samples.png0n30_samples.png

These are for 1/4" scale (1:48). Create a custom 7mm/16.2mm gauge setting and then convert them on the gauge/scale dialog  -- convert group button.

regards,

Martin.

Hi John

Please find attached a simple library for 009. It consists of a track length and a 1:6 turnout

Using the storage box click add library... and navigate to the .box file

You can select these items and copy to the control template for easy use.

I based these designs on Vale of Rheidol and Lynton and Barsntaple information

These were designed in Templot 0.91c but using in the TDV is OK as they will be converted with no problems.

Cheers

Phil

Thanks the 9' switch makes it a bit smaller, but the look is good.

Thanks

I would like some help with designing some 0-16.5 turnouts please. Hopfully I have attached a file with a 1-4, 1-4.5 & 1-5 turnouts on (if not I need help to attach the file). Sorry I have not tidied up the sleepers, but been at the Watford Finescale show all day

I want to use 7mm sleepers with code 75 bullhead rail and chairs to 00-SF gauge

The problems I can see are that the sleeper ends are too short, and that as I have selected 0 gauge the rails are too thick.

In addition what would the best track centers be, I have used 50mm which is a tad too narrow.

Also how do you save the, non standard gauge

All advice and suggestions would be greatly recieved

Thanks

John

Hi,

Will look at the box file later this week, most likely on Wednesday, and post my findings soon after.

All the best

Thanks

Some how I made the standard sleepers too short @ 31mm, 36mm gives it a better ballance. I think 44mm will be too long. I have just found out Peco teack is 33mm

Hi John,

Does this look any better?

2_200722_330000000.png2_200722_330000000.png

I'm not entirely sure that 00-SF is a good idea for this in view of the sharp curves. At 1.0mm flangeway you would be modelling S7 narrow gauge and for that you would need to work to S7 wheel profiles and tolerances. 00 gauge commercial wheels and back-to-backs may not be suitable for 16.2mm gauge at these radii. (The attached file is for 16.5mm gauge 00-BF flangeways.)

Code 75/82 4mm rail is equivalent to 1.57" wide in 7mm scale. So I set that head width at real > rails > rail section data... menu item.

Code 82 FB foot width is equivalent to 3.14" wide in 7mm scale, so I set that also.

At real > timbering > timbering data... I set sleepers to be 60" x 9" at a maximum spacing of 36".

I also changed to real > timbering > timber ends in-line.

For the switch I changed from GWR 9ft to the 1:24 short model switch. This is a general purpose switch for applications such as this.

For the wing rail front and vee rail lengths I changed the settings at real > V-crossing options > customize V-crossing... menu item.

I set the adjacent track spacing to 56mm (8ft in 7mm scale) at tools > adjacent track centres... menu item. This is just a stab in the dark. It depends on the body width of your intended rolling stock. Narrow gauge railways tend to use wider track spacings for loops so that staff can easily walk between the trains -- double track narrow-gauge running lines are rare in the UK.

All these settings can be changed to whatever you feel gives the results you are looking for. :)

regards,

Martin.

Thank you for that its much better, I have changed the sleepers to 10" & 12" and track centers to 60mm, though that may need to be larger as per your reply

2 of us at the club fancy building a small 0-16.5 layout. The track plan is based on a small (last minute stand in )minimum spaced 00 gauge layout we had at the show at the weekend. The scenic section was 51" x 13" with a 21" fiddle yard

I have attached a rough plan so that we can check sizes etc. The distance between the 2 crossovers may be wrong and the crossover should be a single slip (top left to top right).

Next is to place stock on the plan, to convert the lengths of track from 00 to 0-16.5 stock length

To explain trains enter from top left, station and platform top right. Bottom left cattle pen / end loading plank. Top left siding Goods shed, bottom left siding coal yard.

The fiddle yard is a 3 road revolving, which we may change to cassette and run the bottom left siding in front of it.

I have brought Exacto scale &mm 10" & 12" sleepers, plan is to use Exactoscale & C&L chairs with code 75 rail. Code 100 may be better but I want the track chaired.

All comments on any of the areas covered will be valued. Thanks again

John
