Some of my templates are very long because I have used F3 extend approach road and F4 overall length.

I have isolated most templates for printing by selecting groups and then 'output>print group templates only'  which works fine.

I believe the best technique is to select the necessary templates as group members and then omitting and printing the required sheets in the print dialogue.

But is there a more efficient method?

Just in case anyone else is looking for a new A3 printer.
I have previously needed to calibrate my printers but recently acquired an Epson WF7515 A3 ink-jet printer. When I went through the calibration process I found that the printer calibration sheet was spot-on for sizes. Although I saved a calibration file the machine works 'straight out of the box' !
Not cheap tho'.

Regards

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

If you want to print just one template, the usual way is to copy it to the control template, and then output > print the control template menu item (F11).

This function also prints any background templates which happen to be on the same page(s), so strictly speaking you should do delete to the control before printing and store it again afterwards. Otherwise you will be printing the same thing twice. You won't know that of course because the second one will exactly overwrite* the first one, so it hardly matters.

*on the internal image. The printer won't print the ink twice. :)

If you want to print several unconnected templates, print them as a group. To select them into the group:

Put the name labels on if not already (END key). Click the group > group select > click templates to group menu item. Then you can simply click the name labels for the ones you want, to add them to the group. This avoids the need to mess about later omitting pages on the print preview. Clicking the label again removes the template from the group. Selecting any other function terminates this mode of working.

You can also select/deselect a template to or from the group by clicking group select (toggle) on its pop-up menu, or by pressing G on the keyboard. This avoids the need to put the labels on.

Of course if the templates form a connected chunk of track plan, it may be easier simply to drag the group selection fence round them. This is also the easiest way to select a group if it contains a lot of partial templates.

Thanks for the recommendation. Most top-brand ink-jets are very accurate when new. :thumb:

Not so laser printers -- and the heat tends to shrink the paper, increasing the error. Laser printers need careful calibration to get accurate templates.

Even an ink-jet will need checking again after a few months use.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for the template printing methods. I'll have a go at implementing them this evening.

And also many thanks for the printer calibration advice. Without it I might have carried on regardless, assuming that the calibration was always correct. I will try to remember to check it at least monthly.

Hi Jerry.
In my opinion an A3 printer is definitely a worthwhile investment for Templot users and some A3 printers can print custom size paper allowing larger sheets of paper to be defined and used. The HP one I have does so (although that has been a bit of a saga in its own right) and some time ago I purchased some A1 paper and slit it down the middle to produce double length A3 sheets. I have a number of calibration files in which the length figures vary by VERY small amounts + and - as I have found that humidity (more than temperature) can have noticable effects over that length. I use a standard cal file and print one sheet, then check it for accuracy with a 24" steel rule and if neccesary change the cal file before printing multiple pages. Even with A3 pages some variation can be noticable.
So don't just assume it is accurate.
Tony.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your experiences with A3 printers.

I have not yet tried whether it will print longer then 420 mm, but I will try your idea.

Over the last 10 years or so I have worked with several brands of printer, Canon, HP, Brother as well as Epson. Only the Epsons which I have used have consistently maintained anything like dot accuracy over a long period. The graphics people amongst us will only look at HP or Epson.
I regularly use an Epson Stylus R800 on which we print molecular structures and have found this admirable. But this is my first foray into A3 for myself , I look forward to seeing how it performs.

Thanks for your advice
Jerry
