Bit of a beginner question here, but I'm making my first tie-bars (for a double slip) having used kit tie bars before.

What is the recommended total travel of the switch, or put it a better way, how big should the gap from stock to switch rail be in the "open" position?

TIA

Ian

Hi Ian,

The prototype switch opening is 4.1/4"

That scales to 2.5mm in 7mm scale, or 100 thou.

That should be enough in GOG-F, or you may want to increase it to say 3mm or 120 thou just to be sure that there is a full opening all along the switch rail. The wheels should not contact the back of the open switch rail when running through a switch -- the opening should be wider than the normal flangeway gap, all the way along.

regards,

Martin.

Ian,

have you read Mike Norris's article on his Preston layout in BRM 2011 Annual? I think it is about the best design I have seen in terms of simplicity and robustness and might be a good bet in 7mm as well.

Good Luck!

Howard.
