I know how to create a crossover using the >tools>make simple crossover but i get stuck trying to create a crossover between two existing tracks spaced at say 100mm apart. I usually try to guestimate the position of the second turnout. There must be a more accurate way but being only an occasional user i've not figured it out.Can anybody give me a pointer to a relevent tutorial or suggestion.
RegardsRay.

Hi Ray,

If you know the spacing exactly, say 100mm:

1. insert a turnout in one of the tracks.

2. tools > adjacent track centres... and enter 100mm for the TS spacing.

3. tools > make simple crossover.

That will give you the rail geometry, but the timbering will not be very prototypical. A proper prototypical wide crossover needs a bit more work.

There is a video about creating a wide crossover at 100mm centres, at:

Hi Martin. Thanks for the very quick response. The video shows creating a wide crossover from a single track to create a double track with a wider spacing. I'd already worked this one out.My problem is that the two double tracks already exist. I could do as you first suggest but like you say the timbering is out.Maybe i'm approaching this from the wrong angle.I've used the >make return curveto create the two parallel tracks from a single line and want a crossover between them to form a run around with a head shunt.Thinking about this maybe i should create the crossover first and then bring the other track back onto the mainline?

Hi Ray,

The usual way would be to follow the video to create the crossover, and then shorten or replace the existing second track to clear the new turnout.

Alternatively, you can insert a turnout in the second track (make sure the crossing angle is the same as the first one), then zoom in and  roam (CTRL-F9 or 9) or snake (CTRL-F6 or 6) it into alignment. Add some branch track on the first turnout first, onto which to align it. This method may feel more intuitive and is also the method to use if you don't know the exact spacing dimension.

There is a more geometrical method using the notch on intersection function, but the above should work fine in most cases.

If you attach your .box file I can be more specific.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin.
Hopefully my attempt at this is attached (box file). I redone it by creating the crossover first and then making a return curve to join up, but it still involved some guess work.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for posting your file. :)

Are you sure 25ft (100mm) track spacing is wide enough for a long island platform? That makes the platform only 15ft-6in wide, which doesn't leave much space for platform structures allowing the minimum 6ft clearance on each side.

It seems a shame to use Templot and end up with a dead straight track layout. Long straight tracks are very difficult to lay without the slightest kink, which will jump out to the human eye when viewed end-on.

You have used 1:6 turnouts throughout, which are very short if you are copying a prototype track plan. I think the first turnout at the far right would more likely be about C-10, with perhaps B-8 for the crossover.

You seem to have enough space for such sizes, so I had a try. This seems a more flowing design without the abrupt B-6 turnout on the right (your original is below it):

To create the crossover road I made a branch track on each turnout and then used the make transition function to replace them with a single linking template.

The run-round seems very short -- presumably only for goods shunting? To keep it as wide as possible I inserted a short straight length before the return curve.

Hi Martin,
Many thanks for your valued comments.
Firstly, the track plan is a first rough just to see if something could be fitted into my available 12' based on the prototype.

I take your point regarding the spacing (100mm), this was arrived at by scaling up the drawing I had but admit there's a lot of room for error here.
That said, all the buildings are to the left of the bay platform (top) but I will see if I can find a more defined measurement for this.
Edit: I've just taken some measurements from a couple of pictures using people as a reference, looks to be about 25' wide so will need to adjust the track spacing to approx 138mm(?).

The same can be said for the straight track, looking at what photos I have that's how it is. I could put in a slight curve but wonder if this would command criticism from those in the know.

The B6 turnouts are the Templot defaults, like I said this is just a first stab. I did play about with the turnout to the shed (B5) to create an offset Y.

I did a printout full size and managed to get the engine to easily run around 4 Maunsell coaches, which is the longest I can have in the fiddle yard.

Thanks for the attachment, I'll have a look when I get to my PC. (Doing this on the iPad).

Ray.
