I want to lengthen a timber towards the label without moving the other end.
The only way I can see to do this is to lengthen the timber and then use throw with the mouse which loses me the end position.

What's the difference between forward/backward and crab-left/crab-right they seem to do exactly the same things ?
Why is there no button equivalent of the mouse action throw ?
Or is there some way of getting a guide line for the ends of the timbers ?

Hi Mike,

Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking lengthen or pressing L. Same for shorten and S.

What's the difference between forward/backward and crab-left/crab-right they seem to do exactly the same things?
Try twisting the timber first to see the difference.

On a straight template, if the timber has not been twisted there is no difference.

On a curved template, if the timber has not been twisted there is a difference, but you will need to move the timber a long way to see it. On a curved template, try moving timber J1 along to the far end, and then crabbing J2 to the same position. Generally you should always use along for large movements (after adding a bonus timber for example).

If you use crab for large movements, notice that the timber parts company from its number label.

Move another timber along to act as a marker, and then restore it afterwards.

Alternatively, you can add a guide line along the template by temporarily moving the track centre-line to a custom offset. For the timber ends, the offset would be [minus] half the sleeper length. I will look at adding that as a pre-set option: geometry > centre-line options (expert) > menu items.

Why is there no button equivalent of the mouse action throw ?
No room for the button. That dialog is already packed as tight as I can get it. Instead, use lengthen at one end and shorten at the other alternately.

Most of the above is explained in the notes. Click the ? help button on the shove timbers dialog (top right).

regards,

Martin.

Thanks.

I notice that twist also works differently after crab, rotating the timber about it's original center and not it's new center. So I think I'll just ignore crab for now.

Hi Mike,

The main use for crab is when creating waybeams or baulk timbering (for coal drops, ash pits, etc.). Twist a timber through 90 degrees and then crab it across under the rail:
