My Officejet HP 8600dn A3 printer has failed for the second time and the repair man says it will cost more than a new printer to repair.  Not impressed with it as it has been not much used and parts seem not to be easily got in the UK either.

Anyone any suggestions for a replacement A3 printer?  Ink jet not laser.
Thanks
Raymond

I have an Epson R3000 - which I'm generally happy with, but it's expensive to run in terms of ink. I use it for photography stuff as well as output from Templot. It can output to a little larger than A3 - SuperA3.

Raymond,

I got a A3 Canon Pixma IX7000 a year or two ago to replace my previous Epson LQ A2 printer. It has worked well and has given me very good quality prints but I have a couple of cons.

1. It is very large compared to your average home printer and is obviously intended for office use. I should maybe have gone for one of the smaller Canon A3 printers

2. It is quite slow to operate - not to print, which is does quite quickly - but to set up before printing. When you press "Print" it normally takes several seconds before it actually starts to print so it can be quite annoying when you want to print off a quick report. i presume that this is something in its setup to optimise it for small business use. If you want to print several copies of a letter, it takes its several seconds to think about it, then spews the copies out extremely quickly - much quicker than your average inkjet.

Ink usage seems to be quite good. It has five cartridges - three colour, a photo black and a much larger main black cartridge. For my personal use, the cartridges seem to last for quite a time and the replacement cost is around £10 - 12 each from online suppliers. It also has a very large cartridge of coating which it sprays on every page to give an improved finish to cheaper paper. This lasts for a long time and I have found that you can run the machine with this cartridge empty if you don't want the treatment.

The actual jets are on the printing head - not the cartridges like the HP ones. I believe replacement heads are available for user fitting if there are problems.

BTW, if you are scrapping your HP printer, do a demolition job and look for bits for your workshop. My Epson printers provided me with several long stainless steel shafts which turn beautifully. :D

Hope this might help in your choice of a machine.

Jim.
