I have been looking for a set of roller gauges in both EM and P4 gauges that I feel happy using C&L and Exactoscale chairs (those of you who have read a similar thread on RMweb I am sorry for duplicating the thread). I have 2 different sets of roller gauges (in EM). A pair with shallow slots which I think do not affect the chairs and a set from C&L which have much deeper slots and are more positive to use (the deeper slots hold the rail more firmly) than the other set, but when used narrow the gauge. Now for copperclad construction the C&L roller gauges are fine as the rail is held firmly in the upright position, but alas for the plastic chair construction where the chairs are on a 1-20 inclination, the gauges hold the rail in the vertical. When the gauges are removed the chairs go back to their 1-20 inclination and the gauge narrows. What I am looking for is a gauge with a positive connection to the rails but allows for the 1-20 inclination. I have a contact who is willing to turn me a set and I am looking for any advice that is available Please forgive this bad photo (will up load from my phone soon)undefined The thought behind this drawing is that there is a positive connection to the rails on the inside without affecting the rail inclination, and the outer bar is at a depth that will not hold the rail in the vertical plain. A further suggestion is to cut the outer sides at the 1-20 inclination allowing a slightly deeper slot, which would allow them to grip the rail more firmly without affecting the inclination of the rail. All thoughts would be most welcome Thanks for reading this thread John |

Hi John, Paul Stokes (Store and Trade Liaison) of the Scale 7 group has already been down this path. The stores now sell roller gauges in S7 that keep the inclination. It may be worth having a talk with him at some point. Matt M. |

The head of bullhead rail is radiused on the corners and will easily turn through the small angle of 3 degrees within a standard roller gauge slot: 2_291255_350000000.png It is only necessary not to make the slot so deep that it engages the rail foot. A slot depth of 1.0mm is about right* for 4mm scale. The chairs hold the rail upright (at 3 degrees, 1:20), so when using functional chairs there is no need for the gauge tool to hold the rail, it is used solely for gauging. *for gauging between the chairs, not above them. regards, Martin. |
