As you know, we have the beginnings of a new Templot Companion web site at: http://templot.com/companion/index.html Alexander at EC Software has now produced a nifty new package to create a replacement for the ageing E-Book executable format. It seems to me that this has the potential to become a much-needed alternative to the old Microsoft HTML Help (.chm) format. The main advantage over the web-based format is that each call from within the Templot program would open in the same window, which you can resize and minimize independently of your browser. The disadvantage of the web-based format is that each call opens a fresh browser tab or window. Now that most folks have broadband, there is not the size problem when including the entire docs in each update download as there once was, so you might like to try downloading and running this test (20MB): http://templot.info/beta_ewriter_test.exe Compare the functioning of the viewer with the web version, and let me know if anything doesn't work the same way. Thanks. Please don't comment on the content, this is just a test of the viewer functionality. The file is for test only, and will expire in 7 days time. • The viewer uses Internet Explorer as the rendering engine. If you have javascript turned off in Internet Explorer, full functionality will not be available. Many thanks, Martin. |

This laptop just downloaded it in a flash and opened it up with no problems at all. Content looks very smart and seems to be functional. I'm running a Lenovo i7 processor, W8.1 fully up to date with patches, and Avast! Free as the AV/Firewall, on top on the inbuilt Windows Defender. HTH Paul Willis |

Hi Martin, I tried it in IE10 using both W7 and W8 (64bit). It worked well on both machines. I did not have time to make a detailed comparison with companion but my initial impression is that there are no problems. I do have one personal comment - At my age the eyesight is getting a little weak. I normally run IE at 125% which I can see fine. I could not find a way to zoom in or change the font size in the ewriter. Glen |

I will ask Alexander if the usual keyboard shortcuts can be added. Thanks for this report, it is what I was really asking for -- any differences between eWriter and the existing web version. regards, Martin. |

I am running WinXP and use Firefox - V26.0 - fully up to date. The exe file opened and told me my copy of Internet Explorer was out of date and "invited" me to visit Microsoft's website to download a fresh copy of IE. Since I don't want to do that, I can't open the viewer. It did also suggest I installed an up to date copy of another browser but gave me no clue as to how to open the viewer in Firefox. Sorry, no dice here. Judi R |

I have now managed to run the file and it opened in Google Chrome without problems. But to do this I had first to go to the file, right click on it and in the properties tab it said the file was blocked. So I took the "unblock" option, and then all was well. Was it my NOD32 antivirus causing the file to be blocked? John |

John Lewis wrote:I have now managed to run the file and it opened in Google Chrome without problems.Hi John, The reason for the security warnings is that the program code is unsigned -- I do not have a code signing certificate. To get one would cost me about £200 per year, which is untenable for a free program. One of the downsides of Templot being free is that you must click away these security warnings. Sorry. regards, Martin. |

Martin, It seems to run fine on my Win7 64bit setup. I get the "Do you want to run this program" dialog box at the start, in common with a lot of other bits of software I have, and it starts and runs well when clicking through that dialog. Like Glen. I usually run web pages at slightly larger sizes and am used to using Ctrl+, but the Ctrl + Middle Wheel works fine for enlarging. Jim. |

Hi Martin It just works fine, with no warnings or anything. This is on Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit with Microsoft Security Essentials for AV protection. Go for it! |

H I Martin, Works fine for me, on Windows XP, SP3, AMD Athlon XP 3000+, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, Internet Explorere 8. The only minor quibble, it was slow in loading the Companion data once the first original main window had opened. Otherwise, it’s good. All the best. Brian Nicholls. |

Hi Trevor, Probably a silly question, but did you wait a while for it to do anything before closing the viewer down ? The reason I ask this is because when I first opened the viewer, it came up with the a basic form type screen, and having waited for a little while, began to think Martin had just sent this screen for the test (although, the size of the download file, suggested otherwise). Then after a while, it suddenly burst into life, and the companion data came in OK. This is why I made the comment about it in my message just above yours. Just thought I would ask. All the best. Brian Nicholls. |

Dave Summers wrote: Perhaps of limited interest, Martin, but it runs fine on my new Macbook Pro with OSX 10.9.1 under Crossover. Thanks Dave. Not of limited interest at all. It uses Internet Explorer as the rendering engine (hence the slower response than Firefox or Chrome), so it is interesting that Crossover is apparently installing a version of IE on the Mac. Normally Crossover/Linux/Wine uses Firefox as the browser. Many thanks for all the replies. There are obviously still a few issues to iron out. regards, Martin. |

Hi Martin I downloaded the link to my Windows 8.1 system and it took 1.5 minutes to download and all seemed ok. It then came up with the Windows warning about not recognising the software which I accepted. However it then continued to give the roundabout symbols and did nothing further. Hope this is helpful even if negative. Drop me an email if you want further details/trials. Regards Peter |

Peter, This sounds similar to the problem I had. Try navigating to the file you downloaded, right click on it and select the "Properties" option. This will probably tell you that the file is blocked, but will also give you the option of unblocking it. Unblock it and the file should work OK. John |
