I've been asked if I know what this bit of equipment is. I don't, except my guess is it's something to do with tamping. Does anybody else?

Thanks

Hi Nigel

It is a set of three wackerplates ganged together. They are usually used to compact the base ballast prior to placing the sleepers, turnout timbers or concrete bearers. Once the rail has been fitted and ballasted it can be run on under a TSR. I think there may be some photo's of them in use on the Dawlish washout thread on RMweb.

Hi Phil

Thanks a lot. I've passed it on to the photo owner.

Some tampers have a humungous version of these whackers under one end (the back when working). It makes everything shake. Using it behind a High Output Ballast Cleaner means that after a ballast regulator has followed the tamper the line can usually go straight back to full line speed without need for a TSR. Working with them is horrible :-(

Being able to go straight back to line speed is a massive benefit and part of what offsets the huge cost of an HOBC working for the night.
