Hello

I suspect I am having a senior moment but I have to redesign part of an earlier plan to cope with, amongst other things, tracks getting too near the baseboard edge. I have extracted the area in question from the full plan to make it a bit easier (hopefully).

The layout is 00 FS. The crossover in question is a trailing crossover between the up and down "fast" lines in order to allow trains to start back from the down "fast" platform. The track as you will see in the box file is curved at this point. The crossover has to all fit on one baseboard for ease of operation. The baseboard edges are (left) between approx 525/6810 and 1300/6870 and (right) between approx 900/8150 and 1525/7075.

Currently I have a 1:6 REA semi-curved "C" turnout in the "up" line (the inside track) and a 1:8 REA semi-curved "D" in the "down" line, with the very useful new extend branch track function turned on to try and fix an intersection - which I have so far failed to do. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Paul

Hi Paul,

A C-6 is an unusual size and not usually much help. As you can see when used on the inside of a curve it has produced rather too sharp a radius of 21.7" for finescale 00. The usual minimum would be 24" for 00-BF and 30" for 00-SF:

You have the crossing angles back to front :) -- use the 1:8 on the outer curve and maybe 1:6 on the inner curve.

Also note that you have a misalignment at the end of the main road because at that point you are still within the transition zone.

A useful way to find an appropriate crossover alignment in a situation like this is to use the make diamond-crossing at intersection function, and then convert the half-diamond to a turnout. See also:

I will have a quick dabble at this for you and see if I can come up with something.

The layout is 00 FS.
You are using 00-BF. Did you intend it to be in 00-SF?

regards,

Martin.

Paul,

Try this. The curves are more gentle which should look better and allow stock to traverse more prototypically. They are now a B9 and a C7.

Martin - many thanks for responding so quickly! No it is supposed to be 00-BF, sorry!

Ian - many thanks, I will examine that shortly.

Hi Ian,

Unfortunately your C-7 breaks over Paul's baseboard joint. Also the misalignments with the running line curves on the right are still there.

Hi Paul,

Try this. The outer turnout is a C-9. The inner one is down to B-5.5 to keep well within your baseboard joint. Something a bit longer would look better as Ian showed, but there isn't room.

I also realigned your running lines and extended the transitions between the platforms for better curves.

If you use it, over to you to tidy up the timbering. :)

p.s. this .box file includes a turnout with the turnout road set to adjustable and will crash all versions of Templot earlier than 209a. Update info is at:

Drat. I hadn't taken into account the fact that it may have to be broken down at the baseboard joints.

Firstly thank you Martin. Once again you have responded almost instantly to someone's problem :-)

I owe you both an apology. The baseboard size I quoted was incorrect on the right hand side - for some inexplicable reason I put 7075 as the grid reference when it should have been 7675, which gives a lot more space. I blame it on my new glasses ;-)

I will incorporate your solution Martin, but will, I think, be able to expand the geometry of the inner point towards C7 as it will fit on the board. I will look at the timbering later.

Once again, many thanks.

Paul

Hi Paul,

That's better. :)

Now there is no need for the reverse curve in the crossover. Turnouts are C-10 and B-8.5 :
