Hi Martin,

I do not think this is a flaw, but when trying to refresh Templot2 in my browser (IE 11) at 11:30 pm last night (too early for the after midnight server maintenance shut down), I got this strange message, which I have never seen before:

"Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /home/models85/public_html/forum/databases/mysql.php on line 25

 Too many connections

Unable to connect to database server"

Now I tried closing down my browser and the internet, and then restarting and reopening the browser, but when I tried to access Templot, I had exactly the same message, so gave up until this morning, when everything appeared OK again.

All the best,

Brian.

Brian,

That's neither a fault with Templot or your computer.
It's an issue with the web server hosting this forum, and it's connection to the MySQL database server which provides the data store for all of this forum.

Martin: If this is the first time this has been experienced, it's probably nothing to worry about.
But if it's happening on a regular basis, then it might be worth following up with your hosting provider.

Regards,
Tim Lyth

Hello,
I encountered that on my Linux system while using Firefox yesterday. It happened a few times and I don't think it was just with Templot.Things seem OK today so far.Is it likely to have been a server somewhere between me and other sites?
Trevor.

Hi Tim,

Many thanks for your input on this problem, it is very reassuring to know it's not my computer, and as I stated in my posting message, I did not think it was a fault with Templot.

I am most grateful for your reply and now feel relieved about the dilemma. :thumb:

All the best,

Brian.

Sorry about the downtime last night. It was caused by server congestion -- another user on the same shared hosting was obviously having a sudden burst of activity. When that happens the database engine locks out, and needs Jim to reset it.

If you get similar mySql errors in future, please just try again later.

We are due to move to a new server soon, which should cure the problem.

The hosting is with Jim Hale in Ohio. Jim's day job is engineering / CNC programming. In the evenings he runs a web hosting business as Data 1 Systems. He's not a reseller like most, he's a hands-on techie with over 20 servers in his own rack in the cera.net data centre in Columbus Ohio. He's not too good at the PR or sales flannel -- just great customer service and nothing too much trouble. I've had all the Templot stuff with him for over 7 years now.

If you would like to see where your messages here are stored for eternity, here's the cera.net data centre in Columbus:

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Trevor, Martin,

Many thanks for the additional information, it is appreciated.

As I am sure you are aware, when strange previously un-encountered messages appear, one starts to think of 'virus' or 'malware' infection, so thought it best to query the situation.

Martin,  Although Jim's sql message does state, and I quote part of:

  "Too many connections

Unable to connect to database server"

It would have been helpful to us laypeople to have added the words:

"The server is busy, please try to access later"

This may then remove any apprehension that something more serious is occurring with the program or system.

However, hopefully, this posting will make other club members aware of the strange message, and not question further if a fault has occurred.

I, for one, now understand the problem.

All the best,

Brian.

Hi Brian,

The default message "Unable to connect to the database server" was intended to explain that it is a database error and reassure users that the problem is not at their end.

I have now expanded this to:

Sorry, because of technical problems we are currently unable to display the Templot Club web site. Apologies for any inconvenience. Please try again later.

But I can't test it until we get another error. :)

We can't say that the server is busy, because that might not be the actual reason.

It's important that the technical stuff is also displayed for diagnostic purposes.

Just to clarify -- this all applies to the Templot Club forum web site only. Your running Templot2 program is not affected, nor access to the Templot Companion pages.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

That default message now looks fine, and should stop further queries being raised.

If I, (or anyone else), get the problem again, I will let you know immediately exactly what the message reads.

All the best,

Brian.

Hi Brian,

Templot Club will be offline for a while later tonight for the entirely different reason that I shall be uploading a program update.

But first a meal. :)

Some server problems again today. Apologies if you see some strange mySql messages. Please just try again later.

The good news is that I have arranged with Jim for us to have one-half of a dedicated server instead of the previous shared hosting on a public server. That should solve all the problems and allow the Templot web sites to hum along just fine, and with plenty of space for the expanding Image Gallery and new videos. At present we are getting close to our quota limits, with web space filling up fast and many hundreds of downloads of some quite large files.

The bad news is that it is going to make a much bigger dent in the donations fund, so many thanks for all the kind contributions. :)

We shall have just one neighbour occupying the other half of the server (otherwise it would have been an even bigger dent). At present it looks likely that our neighbour will be a club for collectors of antique electric fans -- see: http://www.fancollectors.org

This will be a brand new server which Jim now has on order. He is hoping to have it installed in the data centre and the transfer completed within the next couple of weeks.

regards,

Martin.

It has taken a bit longer than expected (don't ask), but I'm advised by Jim that our new server is now installed in the rack and configured, and this Templot Club web site will be moving onto it tonight.

That means the site may be down for a short while, but should be back up tomorrow on the new server running much better and with all the space we will ever need to expand.

Our only neighbour on this server will be the electric fan collectors:

 http://www.fancollectors.org

Jim moved them last night so that if there were any teething problems it was for them, not us. :)

But it all went well, so we aren't expecting any problems tonight.

Many thanks for putting up with the occasional server issues with the old shared hosting which we have been on for the last 7 years. The new arrangement is costing a lot more, but should be trouble-free for years to come. At least I very much hope so and Jim assures me it will be.

regards,

Martin.

You may want to make a note of this now.

You may have noticed that after the server change the Detailed Site Search is not working.

This is a known issue and Jim is on the case. :)
