Each time Templot is run it checks to see if there is a newer version before opening the program. I want to be able to use the software in situations where I have no internet access. Is there a way to disable the automatic checking?

Thanks

Hi Davy,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Update checking on start-up is part of the terms of use for free use of the Templot2 program. Please see paragraph 3 at:

 http://templot.com/companion/index.html?terms_of_use.htm

To use Templot2 on your computer where there is no internet connection, please start Templot2 where you do have a connection, and then use the Hibernate function* on your computer. On laptops this doesn't use any battery power, the computer is turned off with the entire current computer state stored on disk. Templot2 needs internet access only during start-up.

Alternatively you can get an internet connection almost anywhere via a mobile broadband dongle or a 3G mobile phone. The Templot start-up uses less than 1KB, so will have minimal effect on your bandwidth quota.

*On older systems Hibernate is usually activated by holding down the SHIFT key and then selecting Sleep or StandBy instead of ShutDown. On newer systems Hibernate or Hybrid Sleep are usually on by default when you click Sleep. On desktop computers Hybrid Sleep allows you to turn off the computer power after going into Sleep mode. For more information see:

 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions

Be aware that start-up after Hibernation may take a few minutes longer than a normal cold start.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin

Really?  I hibernate (not sleep) both my laptop and desktop for exactly the opposite reason - starting from hibernation is hugely faster than from cold - on the desktop, maybe half a minute and I'm ready to go!

Hi Paul,

That's the thing about Windows -- it is impossible to make a definitive statement about anything. :?

Except perhaps that of the millions of Windows computers on the planet, no two are the same!

My desktop system is ready to use about 30 seconds after a cold start. But it runs slow for the next 2 minutes or so while it is obviously doing some housekeeping in the background.

Whereas from Hibernation it takes about 5 minutes to be usable, and 2 minutes before anything at all appears on the monitor. The Templot screen comes up first, but it is another 3 minutes or so before it will respond to the mouse or keyboard.

I think perhaps a lot depends on how much the system has been used before you Hibernate. If you have been using the computer all day there will be a lot more in memory to save and restore than if you start from cold and then Hibernate after only 10 minutes use. Also of course on the size of the memory. A top-spec system is going to have far more work restoring a system used for video editing, than one used only to check emails.

regards,

Martin.

p.s. Paul,

Didn't we have a discussion a while ago about the presence or otherwise of any voltage on the motherboard in the hibernated state? Did we arrive at any conclusion? :)

Recovery time may depend on whether you switch off power while hibernated, and whether you do it with the front power button or using the mains on-off switch at the back.

Yes, we did, now you come to mention it!  I can't remember the context now though.  I know that on my current desktop PC, there's no difference if power is left on or not.  I hibernate it and turn the mains off overnight, but during the day I'll leave mains on and just run up the PC when I need to use it - it's quick enough to come back for a quick google, then hibernate again.  I guess the key is fast hard drives!

At work recently I bought three identical Dell desktop PCs.  When I was configuring them, all three behaved slightly differently...
