Following some discussion on RMweb, here are some suggested dimensions for running unmodified EM wheels on 18.83mm gauge track: Track Gauge: 18.8mm MIN Check Gauge: 18.0mm MIN Crossing Flangeway: 0.8mm - 0.85mm Check Span: 17.2mm MAX Wheel Width: 2.0mm MIN Back-to-Flange: 18.0mm MAX Back-to-Back: 17.3mm MIN RP25/88 wheels (0.6mm flange): 17.4mm MAX EMGS wheels (0.5mm flange): 17.5mm MAX I have now added this to the list of gauge/scale pre-sets in Templot, with the name EM4 (18.8mm gauge, 0.8mm flangeway). In the next program update: 2_241151_060000000.png Check rail chairs for 0.8mm flangeway are available from C&L -- see: http://www.finescale.org.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=346_347_348&product_id=3938 The 0.8mm flangeway is narrower than a rail-width, so retains the "P4 look" while accommodating the thicker EM flanges. Unlike ordinary EM, this standard is not suitable for widened RTR wheels (RP25/110). • Note also that this will have similar problems to H0 -- it is difficult to find space for overscale wheels under scale-width models unless the track gauge is reduced. regards, Martin. |

Martin, If you are adding pre-sets, I would quite like FS160 added. The details are in the FS160 web site here http://www.fs160.eu/fiNeweb/standards/HANDB.php It's been around for about twenty years and is used by mainly European N scale modellers to get finer wheel standards by using 2mmFS standards pushed in to 9mm gauge. I use it to model North American N scale to better track and wheel standards and it works very well basically because it is based on the well tried UK 2mmFS standards (a bit better provenance than a bodge on one layout article in the MRJ ) Jim. |

Martin Whilst we are talking pre-set gauges, how about please a couple no narrow gauge pre-set ones for the dummies like myself who struggle to add my own pre-set gauges. 00-9 and 0-16.5 would be really helpfull. Thanks John |

Jim Guthrie wrote:These look fine. Many thanks - it saves making custom standards.Hi Jim, Bear in mind that selecting a gauge/scale pre-set still gives you the default UK-style REA bullhead settings. If you want a template with American timbering, rail sizes, adjacent track spacings, etc., it is still necessary to create a custom library template. regards, Martin. |

ThanksHi John, I don't often refuse a request, but in this case the answer is no, sorry. If I add narrow-gauges to the pre-sets it will open the floodgates to a minefield -- if I'm allowed to mix metaphors on a Saturday morning. There are just too many of them, they would completely swamp the list. And in many cases establishing the exact standards being used is next to impossible. Also a gauge/scale pre-set does not change the timbering sizes, so you would be not much further forward and many users seeing 2ft gauge rails on 8ft-6in timbers would assume something has gone wrong. For 0-16.5 (0n30) there are some ready-made templates which you can download from: topic 28 Add them as library templates so that you can print them or use/modify them in your track plans. (add library... button on the storage box). When I have an odd moment I will do some 00-9 templates too. regards, Martin. |

What with doing North American in N and Caledonian in S, I don't think I've used a default REA setting for a long time. Just in case anyone is interested, I use this web site as a source for my American track standards. http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/operations/specs/track/index.shtml Jim. |
