Hi,
Just wanted to say what an amazing piece of software!
If I'd posted here a few days ago, it would have been a different opening line, though :D
But a little bit of persistence, and hunting through menu's to find what's altered since the tutorial was written, and I'm finally getting to grips, at least with the basics.
I'm a professional programmer, and I've found it quite fascinating to realise how deeply ingrained my expectations are for the way software 'should' work, and because of this, I made the first few days much harder on myself than they needed to be. It took me a quite ridiculous amount of time to get my head round the 'store and background' concept. Now, however, after having used it a bit, I have to say it's actually a very elegant solution for this particular way of working.
As a professional, I'm always amazed when I see a piece of software like this that is produced as a labour of love, especially when it's done so amazingly well. All the time I've used it, I've not experienced a single glitch. Can't say that for ANY of the commercial software I've ever worked on - or bought .
BUT...
There is no but!
No doubt as I learn more about prototype practice, I'm bound to come against problems I'm too dumb to resolve, but this post is really a massive thanks to Martin. Having been constantly disappointed at the layouts possible with off the shelf track, especially for the busy (real) goods yard I'm looking to model, I'm now really excited at the prospect of producing some super slinky permanent way once I get fully to grips with things!

I think this post should be compulsory reading for all those who post everywhere on the internet except here something along the lines of "I've been using Templot for 10 minutes now and I still can't design Clapham Junction using Peco track therefore Templot is rubbish."
It's heartening for me to read this and I'm only a Templot user  :D

I would like to agree with Dharma66's post.

I have had a copy of Templot for about 2 weeks and still not a expert, but getting better and have produced several quite detailed designs on it and each time I learn something new.

Well done to Martin- and of course to all the other users helping us 'newbies'.

Yes, it took me a while to get to grips with, as you have to get used to thinking in a different way to most other programs. Templot was designed to tackle a particular problem, i.e. designing track as it should be and there is no other program that comes close in my opinion. I have been using Templot now for the best part of 10 years (and still learning)  and actually bought a copy before I owned a PC having watched Martin demonstrating it at Scaleforum and obtained a second hand laptop just to try it on.  Way back then it was version 0.78e and if it had progressed no further it would still have been an excellent program. Since then it has come on leaps and bounds. How many other programs could you put something in the suggestion box and find it added to the next update? It still amazes me how well it works. After a while you begin to realise that there are patterns emerging in the way different functions work and I developed an attitude of 'if want to do something, it is in there somewhere, I just have to find it'.

I could go on but Martin, you have given us track builders / designers something unique and very special and that is why I am proud to be part of this forum and try to help spread the word and help others realise something of Templots true potential. There is no reward without effort so all those newbys out there, persevere, the results will be worth it.

Many thanks for the kind words. I'm glad that Templot proves useful for so many modellers.

Of course seeing it from here I see only the dents, flaws and failings -- I have a notebook full of them. Fortunately as users you can't see most of them. :)

Apart of course from the deficiencies in the docs and help files, which are only too obvious to everyone. :(

So I will just keep plodding on...

Thanks again,

Martin.
