Hi,

I'm a brand new user of Templot (Nov 2007), downloading Version 0.74 from the Templot web site. The web site (dated November 2006) mentioned that an upgrade to 0.82d was available but advised that the upgrade should not be carried out until 0.74 was mastered.

I now notice from the Templot Club site that there has been a string of upgrades since then with the latest one being 0.92b.

Two questions spring to mind therefore. Does the advice about staying with 0.74 still hold? If not can I upgrade directly from 0.74 to 0.92b or do I have install all previous updates first?

Dick

Dick,

The advice to stick with V0.74 for new users is because most of Martin's web based support is based on that version.   Later versions of the software have had facilities added,  and some changes made to menus, etc., which could cause confusion if used with the web site support.

Once you get to know your way around the V0.74 software,  you could upgrade to the later versions since you should have a good idea of how the program works,  and you should find your way round the additions and amendments.

I would recommend having a look through Martin's video tutorials.  You will probably pick up how Templot works a lot quicker after viewing the videos rather than reading the web site support pages.

Is there a version 0.92b?  I thought I was up to date with V0.91b.:)

Jim.

Jim,

Thanks for that, I will stick with  0.74 for the time being. Yes you are right I should have typed V0.91b, it was a misreading on my part. Must get my eyes checked:(

Dick

Hi Dick,

My sincere apologies that things are so unsatisfactory at present.

First, advice:

1. If you have come to Templot mainly to generate and print construction templates, and to customize them in a prototypical fashion, I recommend that you remain with 074b while you work through the tutorials and read the docs at Templot Companion.

As soon as you feel reasonably comfortable with the material there, I recommend upgrading to version 082d or 091b. You need to upgrade in any case when you want to progress from turnouts to diamond-crossings and slips, which are very much easier in the later versions.

For an explanation of the difference between 082d and 091b, see below.

2. If you have come to Templot mainly to design complete track plans, and especially if you have used other track-planning software, I recommend that you upgrade to 082d or 091b immediately. The "pick-and place" functions which you are probably expecting to find are available in 082d and 091b (F7 snapping) but not in earlier versions.

Those functions will get you quickly started, but I recommend that you abandon them in the long run and revert to prototypical design -- which is why they weren't in earlier versions.

Second, rambling explanations:

a. Version 082d is available to all Templot users.

Version 091b is available only to members of this Templot Club forum, on the implied understanding that you will report here any problems which arise. The reason is that the change from 082d to 091b represents a change in the compiler which I use for the Templot program code, and I need to be sure that everything is working properly before I make it a general release. Having said that, very few problems have actually arisen, and it is now nearly 12 months since the change.

There are a few extra features in 091b from 082d, see this topic for chapter and verse and the download link:  topic 113

b. The Templot Companion docs and especially the tutorials were written in 2001 using 074b. Which is why I recommend staying with that version while you are reading and following them. Later versions of Templot have had the menus re-arranged and other changes made. Which are easy to find your way around once you are familiar with the way Templot works -- but not necessarily straight off as a beginner.

The reason the docs are so far behind program upgrades is that I simply don't have the resources to update them. There are over 400 screenshots in the Templot Companion and tutorials, and they would nearly all need revising. My Templot time is almost completely taken up with emails and user support, even program development is effectively at a standstill. :(

However I have been making some silent screen videos from the later versions of Templot. As proper tutorials they are somewhat lacking because they are so bereft of proper detailed notes. But everyone seems to like them and not mind the scruffy unprofessional production. You can find a list of them at: topic 12

Can I upgrade directly from 0.74 to 0.91b or do I have install all previous updates first?
You can go straight from 074b to 091b. But you should always install 074b first because the later downloads do not at present include the sample files or Start menu shortcuts.

You can have as many different versions of Templot on your computer as you want and run whichever you wish at any time. In fact that's probably the best solution to the tutorial update problem. But I hesitate to recommend it generally to new users because I know that some have at best a tenuous hold on the workings of their computer, and I just don't have the stamina to explain it and sort out the inevitable confusions that I know would arise. :(

regards,

Martin.

Martin,

Thank you for this very useful E-mail. At the moment I am looking just to make separate templates but hope later on to graduate to complete track plans. I will therefore stay with V0.74 for the time being as there is plenty for me to get my head round :).

Dick
