Subject: Soddingham-under-Piddle

I tried to look at this plan but was directed into the Forum, can I say that I find the whole concept of the Forum to be a pain, while things come up on Yahoo fine, if it is decided to go completely to Forum format I and I suspect others will drop out.

As an example the DEMU site went to Forum and is such a pain to get to that I never bother.

Sorry to moan.

Hi Andrew

I find that the forum and many others like it are far easier to use and navigate than the lists like the Yahoo one, and more appreciate the ability to see pics in ones mail rather than have to go off looking in a different folder.

I have found the plan easy to view just by clicking on the link at the bottom of the mail and saving to my desktop and then opening it up in Templot. Marting then saved an image and attacted to his mail so all could see without having to download it.

I am sure Martin will be along in a short while to explain better than I can, but if you stick with it I think you will find it's a bit easier than you originally thought (bit like Templot, really :) ).

Hope that helps a little

Tom

Hi Andrew,

You can please some of the people some of the time, but... :)

Some folks prefer forums, some prefer email. Generally the former are in the majority, because on a forum:

1. you can include pictures and diagrams directly on the page. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words, so that's a lot of typing saved!

2. you can read only what interests you and quickly skim or ignore the rest.

3. there is no risk of viruses, spam or dodgy attachments, and no advertising.

4. many users are unhappy about privacy issues and advertising on Yahoo.

But unlike most forums, on this one you can choose. You can go on receiving forum messages as emails -- either via Yahoo, or direct from the forum instead. I have no plans to change this, so if you don't like to visit the forum pages you needn't do so. The only proviso is that you need to register on the forum and visit it if you want to see attached images or download attached files. No personal information is needed to register, beyond your email address.

regards,

Martin.

Andrew: I can't answer about other Fora, but I have a simple "favourite" link, which takes me right into the DEMU forum. Once there, I can read the threads I want, and ignore the rest. And it is easier to search/flick through, than say P4talk, as an example of a Yahoo group.

I am afraid I am with Andrew on this.  Since we went over to the forum system I virtually never read anything from this group - in fact its a complete fluke I saw this thread while I was re-organising an Outlook shortcut bar.

Why?  Well, recovering as I am from CFS I have to try to be very disciplined about what I read and what I ignore, and I decided to have email delivered because I can't always spare the time to log into the forum to see what is going on.  To read the messages in Outlook and I use a combination of Auto-Preview and the Preview Pane to help me to decide what I want/need to read.  However, because of the big headers we get on the messages I quickly found that auto-preview was no use and I was having to scroll down each individual message to get a flavour of what the thread was about.  Net result: reading Templot Forum messages very quickly got put into the "do later" folder, and as we all know, "Later never comes"...

Sorry!

Elliott

I also read Templot messages from Outlook Express and the big disadvantage I found is that they arrive with no indication of authorship - they all come from "forum@templot.com". No disrespect lads but I am selective in what I read, so the net result is I read very little in this forum.

For what it's worth I rather like the Templot forum, for the following reasons...

It's not public, as such. If I post here I'm likely to get a response from someone who is farmiliar with the subject, rather than the usual web "experts", who's contributions are so often accompanied by the Hovis music.

I *loathe* Yahoo groups. All the advertsing and associated rubbish drives me up the wall. E-mail should be plain text only, with links where approprate. If I want graphics, I join a group such as this.

Just my 2p.

Cheers
Richard

I also am not using the forum. I just download all my emails (filtered for non-interest, SPAM, etc.,) in one go in the morning and the evening.

I don't have the personal organization skills and can't afford the time to then start accessing additional web sites individually to get some of that info. That means of course I don't log onto any other MR forums either.

But I figure that's their loss. :)

So I just see the forum emails, and only open them if the subject line looks appropriate. If I do do that, I get quite confused by all the duplicate stuff that seems to follow, so it does seem like a bit of a waste.

Yahoo maybe be a pain and a privacy invasion, but AT&T over here use them for my DSL link, so I'm stuck with their nosy marketing stuff anyway.

But I do select Yahoo's emails to be text only. That's an easy thing to do.

Hi Andy,

How much in the way of "personal organization skills" does it take to click the link at the top of an email? Then you can read an entire topic in context, see the pictures and diagrams, download any attached files, and instantly reply with your own pictures, diagrams and attachments.

On this forum you don't have to receive your emails via Yahoo, you can get them direct from the forum instead. That removes all the Yahoo advertising and junk from the bottom of the email. It's also fast and avoids the notorious Yahoo delays.

All you have to do is register on the forum and make the setting to receive emails. Click the My Account button and then the Emailed Messages tab, and make your settings as required. You needn't ever visit the forum again if you don't want to. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Folks,

Just to add to this thread.

I still receive the templot emails but I only use them as a guide to the activity of a particular thread.
I can then check the quick link on the RSS feeds either through Templot Club or Templot Forum and then read the whole thread in order. By reading a thread on the forum it stops the receiving of subject replies by email that are out of sequence. It may not happen with Templot emails but it does still happen in other groups.

As to the pain of logging on, the only time I log in is if I want to see any attachements to threads (photos, box files, etc,) or like this, to post a reply.

Once I have read the thread I can delete all the recent emails on that subject and keep my Templot email sub folder nearly empty.

As for other forums (e.g Model Rail Forum, RMweb Forum, etc) I don't get emails I just check the RSS feeds for the latest threads.
You can of course bookmark into your favourites a particular thread and then navigate to it via your browser. I have done this with a thread which I didn't want get lost in the deluge of other threads or RSS links on a very active forum.

I do like the way this forum is set up with the RSS feeds and would not want to go back to the old Yahoo/email setup.

Maybe the key is the RSS feeds.

Just my thoughts.

Best regards,
Peter
