Hello Martin

Back on 13th January you replied to my question about transition curves;

When you say that you can't get make transition to work for you, what goes wrong? What do you see? If Templot can't make a transition in the desired place it's unlikely that you will be able physically to fit the tracks there.

In answer to that question I've now, at last, done a screen shot of the problem that I experienced when using "Peg\ Align\ Make transition curve..." . In fact I've done 2 screen shots one of the initial result as proposed by Templot and a second with my change to the curve to make it "match/ align" .

And this is what I modified it to...

I used F6 to change the curve to this which I think looks ok, but without scanning along the curve with my eye down at track level I don't have any means of knowing if I've created a dogleg in this curve. Have I done this the correct way or do you have much better way of achieving a smooth transition?

Many thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

No that's not the best way to use Templot. Aligning templates by eye will often create doglegs and mismatches. Templot contains all the functions you need to create smooth alignments between templates.

After your previous posts I found several such misalignments in your track plan, and spent quite a lot of time fixing them. I'm sorry I haven't yet got back to you with that -- I was hoping to use the diamond-crossings in a new video tutorial.

The reason you are having problems with this transition curve is that the starting templates are themselves transition curves.

When one or both starting template is a transition curve, it is necessary to tell Templot whereabouts within it you want to make the new transition to match. You do that by moving the fixing peg on it to the required position.

Most usually that will be at one end or the other of the template (usually in practice the opposite end to where you last put it) where the radius is not changing and you can adjust the final position of the template boundary as required.

(But you can if you wish put the peg within the transition zone for a match. In that case you must make a split and template boundary at that exact location, because of the varying radius.)

What you need to do therefore is to put the peg at the near end of the template on the left. Click on it, and then peg/align tools > move peg on background template, and notch under >  to CTRL-1. You don't need the notch for this, but it will make no difference.

There is no need for the template on the right to be a transition curve, change it to a constant radius. The make transition function should then create the required S-curve transition between them, see:

Finally you need to adjust the template boundaries so that they are not within the transition zones. That will probably mean moving the fixing peg back to the other end and then shortening the template on the left.

If the new transition zone is too long to do that, cancel the transition, increase the radius of the template on the right a little, and then try again.

(You can quickly swap the fixing peg to the opposite end of the control template by clicking the red peg indicator box at the top left of the screen.)

The original template on the right can probably be deleted and replaced entirely by the new transition curve, adjusting the boundary to match the adjacent template.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks Martin that seems to have done the trick!

I was pretty lucky that all I had to do was to move the fixing peg to business end of the template, "Peg\ Align \ Make transition curve..."  and hey presto it worked as it usually does.

I've included the box file if you have time to check it. It certainly looks ok to me now.

Kind regards

Andrew
