Hello everyone and especially Martin,

I know that this may be old hat to some but please bear with me 8)

It has taken me some time to decide to install Templot and try and learn it.  I am now in the position of needing to plan and make my own oo-sf points and trackwork.

Firstly I must make it clear that I am DEEPLY! impressed with the power of Templot.  I cannot think of a programme ever being more capable than it is for precise track planning.  So please keep that in mind as I am definitely not criticising Templot in any way.

I find the videos very useful but some of the terminology is different now (with the latest version of Templot) than that used in videos or previous 'tutorial webs'.  That aside, today, I finally had the 'eureka' moment and was able to use a scanned map as a background and have started to lay track on it.  One thing which seems to be missing from current templot is 'swell curving' it looks better suited in some instances for bending track as it bends between two fixed points.  The current F6 is not like that and here please is my caveat! I know I'm a new user and learning so forgive me if I have missed the old 'swell curving' in the current Templot.

I am also having great difficulty in making a three way point.  This is the main reason for my post...  I have tried following the posting by Martin.  For instance -

1. Put the notch on the rail intersection for the middle vee in the usual way.*

...just leaves me baffled.   There are so many terminologies used and an assumption that we are all well versed in them.  Sadly I amn't but am keen to learn so - again, forgive me Martin- I would love to learn how to make a three way point; is there a video, possibly with the current version of Templot which I can watch please?

So, all in all, a top piece of software.  Immensely powerful and one which I am gradually 'getting'

Well done Martin!

best wishes

Stuart

Hello Stuart,

Welcome to Templot Club and thanks for your kind words. :)

swell curving is now on CTRL+F10 -- read more about it here:

 http://templot.com/companion/index.html?swell_function_ctrl_f10.htm

I don't make changes to the shortcuts lightly, but this one was forced by the introduction of the irregular diamonds.

1. Put the notch on the rail intersection for the middle vee in the usual way.
I intentionally wrote that way to deter beginners from trying 3-way tandem turnouts until they are well-versed in Templot. :)

Tandem turnouts are not simple -- it really would be better to leave them until later.

At the very least please try a single slip first.

If you watch the first few minutes of the transition-diamond video you will see how to put the fixing peg on a rail intersection. The video is at help > watch a video > Scruff Video Andrew transition diamond menu item.

Note that for the tandem you need the peg on the rail-edge, not the track centre-line -- geometry > peg on line or rail > menu options.

(If you are on a Mac computer or a mobile device, you may need to use the MP4 link instead.)

Then geometry > notch > put notch under peg menu item.

Working over a scanned map is the most difficult way to learn Templot. I wrote about this recently, see:

 topic 2792 - message 19545

It's much easier if you have first learned Templot on some trial track plans, and experimented with all the functions.

I'm sorry the tutorials and docs are so out-of-date. The proper course of action would be to withdraw Templot entirely until I can get them up to date -- which would be months and months of work, none of which I especially enjoy. :(

regards,

Martin.

Martin, many thanks for your prompt reply. I like your humour re putting beginners off 3 ways (point!) I will study these carefully. Thanks!
