I just bought a new laptop with Windows 10 and am nearly done installing all the important things - including Templot of course
I just loaded up my current plan and changed the gauge - all good
I went to print it out and I have a problem - Templot seems to think I have no printers on the system and gives me this error message ...
Templot is unable to locate a printer driver on this system. To install a printer driver, from the Windows taskbar click Start > Settings > Printers > Add Printer.
I checked the printer(s) are still there on the system and yes they areI just printed an email out to test its working and it is
I download Templot yesterday so I assume I have the latest version - it is 2.13a
Any ideas ?

Hi Rob,

That's very odd. I just tested my Windows10 system and it's working fine.

If you have been installing new stuff on the system I suggest you restart Windows before trying Templot.

Also, wait a while after Windows appears to be ready, and switch on the printer. Then restart Templot.

Sometimes Windows pretends to be ready when it isn't -- so you think it starts up faster. Several things are still being initialised in the background while you start work.

Templot needs to be able to see all the printers during its own start-up (so that it can prepare for the calibration data). So wait until Windows is fully initialised before starting Templot.

Windows10 comes with 3 virtual printers already installed, in addition to your own printer. You should be able to see them if you go to Start > Settings > Devices from the Windows taskbar:

1. Microsoft XPS Document Writer (XPS is Microsoft's own alternative to PDF format).

2. Microsoft Print To PDF (so you no longer need any of those add-on PDF generators such as CutePDF).

3. Microsoft Fax Printer (which requires you have a dial-up modem installed, to send it) (black&white).

4. your own actual printer(s).

Which means Templot should be able to see at least 3 printers when it starts up, even on a brand new system.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin
Thanks for the quick reply.
Well I could see all the printers and print from them too. I did a reboot , left the system to do its thing for a few minutes and tried again - now all is fine.
I can now see the printers in Templot and print from Templot
Weird but sorted so I am happy - Thanks

I think this may be the appropriate thread on which to make this posting because I am receiving the identical error message ("Templot is unable to locate a printer driver on this system"), and this after a reboot of the computer and allowance of a few minutes for the system to settle down.

For what it's worth, the computer in question is a reconditioned HP Z400 workstation running Windows 7 Pro.  Templot is Version  2.19.b. The computer has access to two networked printers (one of which, a Samsung laser) is the system default printer.  In addition, the usual Microsoft fax and XPS virtual printers are installed, as well as a freeware PDF virtual printer.

I am confident this is a problem that has developed since I installed Templot on this particular computer because, although it hasn't been necessary for me to do much Templot printing recently, I generated a pdf document using the pdf print utility at the end of December 2017, and I am confident that it was on the machine now affected by this problem that I did so.

The default printer appears to be working satisfactorily for other programs.

Any thoughts as to the cause/remedy?

Hi John,

If it's a network printer, try printing something to it from some other program. If that works, then start or restart Templot.

I have constant problems with my network printer. If I try to print from it too soon after switching it on, Windows10 tells me "the printer is in use by some other computer". If I wait a few minutes and try again, all is well.

Another solution of course is to find a USB cable and connect it directly to the computer. This works every time. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks, Martin.

Thinking it might be some transient problem affecting all programs, I decided to do a test print from the Acrobat reader after the problem manifested itself in Templot.  Thought I had managed to specify printing of a single page, but obviously didn't and as a result ended up with a printout of the whole of the report on the Paragon accident!  Anyway, that seems to confirm that other software is finding the networked printers without difficulty.

Sadly, restarting Templot doesn't cure the problem, as it still seems unable to find any printer drivers - not even the virtual printer driver used to 'print' i.e. create a pdf document file.

I'll bear in mind direct USB connection as a possible solution of last resort, but as yet haven't found the energy to lug the printer across the room for this purpose.

Hi John,

I just tried re-installing 219b on my old Win7 system from scratch. It found the printers ok, and printed to them.

So I'm unable to offer much help, sorry. After making test prints from other software, restart Templot and then try clicking the output > printer setup... menu item. That will force Templot to go looking for some printers.

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks, Martin.  Actually, I'd already tried Output > Printer setup, and that triggered exactly the same error message.

I am wondering whether a re-install of Templot might be a possible cure (though I've no reason other than the current problem to suspect that the software has become corrupted).

I don't know the mechanics involved but suspect that Templot digs into the Registry to locate printer information.  Could it be that there has been corruption of the Registry entries and that this is the source of the problem?  But if that's the case then I would expect other software to be generating similar errors.

Hi John,

When did you receive that message? Only when you tried to print?

You should see a different longer message on start-up if Templot can't find any printers:

"Templot is unable to locate a printer driver on this system. On some systems this may prevent Templot starting. It is not necessary for a printer to be physically present, all that is needed is a printer driver program from the Windows CD-ROM. To install a printer driver, from the Windows taskbar click START > SETTINGS > PRINTERS > ADD PRINTER."

Did you see that on start-up?

If you did not see that, but do see the message when trying to print, it means that Templot can see the printer but is unable to obtain any information from the driver about the printer, such as the paper size, dpi resolution, etc. Without that information Templot can't create the template pages.

In which case this is probably a printer driver problem. You could try downloading the latest driver for it, or maybe try removing the printer, restarting Windows, and then adding the printer again.

p.s. if you are waiting to print a template, don't forget that you can export a PDF file instead (output > export a file... menu item), and then print it via your PDF reader program (which you said is working ok, although how it can do that if the driver isn't providing the page info is a bit of a mystery).

p.p.s. it takes only a minute to download a fresh file and re-install Templot. It's always worth doing that, although it's rare that it makes any difference. You won't lose any data.

p.p.p.s. you said "Thought I had managed to specify printing of a single page, but obviously didn't". Maybe you did, but the PDF reader program is also having difficulty communicating with the driver.

cheers,

Martin.

Martin, thank you so much for the effort you have put into trying to resolve this - unfortunately without success as yet, as my comments below may help to show:

Hi John,

When did you receive that message? Only when you tried to print?  Yes, and when attempting  printer set-up

No

Agreed that this could be the problem, though presumably it means that Templot isn't getting driver data for ANY of the 5 printers for which drivers are installed.  I'll not do it tonight but will try deleting a printer then reinstalling it to see what difference that makes.

p.s. if you are waiting to print a template, don't forget that you can export a PDF file instead (output > export a file... menu item), and then print it via your PDF reader program (which you said is working ok, although how it can do that if the driver isn't providing the page info is a bit of a mystery).  Indeed it is a mystery, but yes, the PDF reader is able to print without problems.

p.p.s. it takes only a minute to download a fresh file and re-install Templot. It's always worth doing that, although it's rare that it makes any difference. You won't lose any data.  Yes, tried that, but unfortunately makes no difference; the reinstalled Templot still thinks there are no printers installed (or at any rate can't read their driver data)

p.p.p.s. you said "Thought I had managed to specify printing of a single page, but obviously didn't". Maybe you did, but the PDF reader program is also having difficulty communicating with the driver.  Yes, that's a bit odd, because the print dialog in the reader program requires you to click the 'Pages' option button in order to enable the textbox in which you specify what page range is to be printed.  Perhaps that suggests that the reader IS having communication difficulties. OTOH, I have subseqently made the reader print a page range selection without error, so the excess range of Paragon report pages printed is almost certainly down to my clottishness.

cheers,

Martin.
I think that re-installation of a printer now offers the best prospect of effecting a remedy.  I can also try it setting it up as a USB-connected printer locally attached to the workstation rather than a remote, networked printer - but not tonight!
