As I have limited space until my new railway/work room is built I thought I could build a small cameo which could be extended into a layout later, the plan will be based (not a copy) on Bodmin General in EM gauge
Whilst  the 6' way is a minimum I am after some guidance on the distance between parallel tracks within a station
There is the run around station loop with water taps
Then the distance between the main running line and the nearest engine shed line
The siding running along side the line to Bodmin Parkway

Hi John,

The only certain way to know is from accurate maps. Many stations were built before the BOT rules came into force, and you can't just change the original position of platforms, goods sheds, engine sheds, signal boxes, etc.

Generally double-track through stations, and passing stations on single lines, have the tracks between the platforms spaced at the standard 6ft way (44.67mm centres in 4mm/ft scale).

At terminal stations the spacing between the platforms is often increased to allow for run-round crossovers, ground signals, water columns, etc.

Goods loops, carriage sidings, loco spurs, etc., should be spaced at 10ft way (60.67mm centres) from a running line, or 9ft way minimum (56.67mm centres) where this is unavoidable because of existing structures, etc. But you can always find exceptions and local rules. Where for example a double line has been singled, and one track remains in use as a siding.

Thank you, as it happens I took a stab in the dark and used 10' for the gap between the shed and the running lines, but not the loco runaround

I guess the engine shed will be much the same with 10' track centres ?

Hi John,

Not 10ft track centres, you mean 10ft-way (15ft-2in centres, 60.67mm). :)

I don't think there is a standard spacing within engine sheds. Here is a typical shed drawing -- the tracks appear to be at 15ft centres (60mm at 4mm/ft):

Obviously it needs to be more than standard 6ft-way to allow safe working for staff on the ground.

Hi John.
Attached is a copy of the map we used when constructing a model of Bodmin in P4. (1920s) It should give you the information you require. Just watch out for the kink in the horizontal axis as the grid lines should obviously be straight and the tracks will be displaced by a similar amount. This is the result of a poor scan but is the best I can do for the moment as I cannot find the original.

Tony  Thank you for the information on this map, the first goal is to have a cameo of the engine shed which all about what I can easily store (and work on) in my temporary workshop/cupboard. And something scenic for any future demonstrations I may do. 
Hopefully it will turnout into a small layout based on Bodmin in a preservation era, just to allow me to run loco's from the GWR & SR in which livery I decide upon. The initial idea was to build it in 00 gauge finescale, after seeing Mikkel's latest work I decided to use ply timbers for the plain track, then if I am going that far why not in EM gauge (I can build track to P4 standards, but the cost and time in re-wheeling stock is a step too far) as I have a large stock of Romford/Markit wheels as well as Gibson and Keen Maygib coach and wagon wheels, I also have a fair few Romford loco axles in EM gauge 
Here is a screen shot of a quick doodle in Templot, on this plan is the Y turnout into the engine shed the same as it is now with the 2 catch or is it trap points within it ?
Edit  I see the catch points are after the turnout on the plan, I fancy building it as it is now

Hi John.
The turnouts in your picture are undoubtedly different to those the plan relates to.
It is also probable that the track spacings are different as well. I would expect the spacing between the running line and the first shed road to be wider with the current layout and the spacing between the two shed roads to be less because of the shed wall and the clearances required. Comparing the two pics would tend to bear this out.

Tony Thanks, the track has altered and I think if I keep the shed line as it is then have a 10' way as per Martins reply.  Here is a little plan overlaying what I think is passable for the new over the old plan, bit of a lashup for the catch points and I guess will need to extend the sleepers on the outside a bit

undefinedundefined :thumb:I have had a quick look at the photo of the turnout, I have used a B8 turnout which seems to have the correct number of timbers up to the Vee, but the Vee is much sharper than a 1-8, looks to be a 1-5 crossing Any ideas of how to achieve this please John

Hi John.
Have you included the correct Box file as this is OOsf, not EM and the Turnout is a B-6 followed by a 1 in 6 double slip into the shed and therefore does not match the text?
