I'm trying to create custom track settings but basically I don't know where to start. What I'm after is 9mm gauge, 3.5mm scale track with a specific sleeper size, using HOe/N standards but with Code 40 rail.
I can get as far as editing one of the Custom gauges, but can't find a way of adjusting rail width, sleeper length etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Chris Veitch

Hi Chris,

Narrow-gauge is easy if you are familiar with Templot, and a significant learning curve if not.

A proper reply will take me a while to write. In the meantime here is a 10-year-old video showing how to customize narrow-gauge templates. Sorry it is so old. The link is in this topic:

 topic 376

I will reply again soon.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Chris,

9mm gauge at 3.5mm/ft scale is approx 2ft-6in gauge. Do you have a specific prototype? Do you know some typical switch sizes and crossing angles, or turnout radii? What wheel standards will you be using - Proto87?

Code 40 rail at 3.5mm/ft is 3.1/2" high, which is mid-way between BS 35lb/yd and 40lb/yd flat-bottom rails.

Assuming 35lb/yd for your prototype, the head width is 1.3/4" and the foot width is 3.1/4". You could use these sizes for your custom settings.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
It's for 76cm gauge for Yugoslav State Railways prototypes, but unfortunately I don't have details of any track geometry so will hope to adopt this from elsewhere. Their rail section looks to be around 45lb/yard so Code 40 seems to be the nearest practical choice. I'll need to use N/HOe wheel standards as I'm intending to adapt at least some commercial stock and some fairly crude experiments suggest that these will be happy with Code 40.

Regards,

Chris
