All,

Has anyone had problems when using cordless mice and keyboards? If so, perhaps you can advise on the following:

I have two computers on my desk. One is for my day to day work, the other is used almost entirely for emails, internet, etc. My thoughts were to use the main computer for Templot, whilst using the email computer to play the explanatory videos.

So far I have been using 0.82, but today I finally managed to get 0.91 on both computers. Both have wireless keyboards and mice. I find these to be so convenient that I would not want to return to wires all over my desk.

The main computer has Logitech keyboard and mouse. Everything works as it should.

The email computer has a Microsoft keyboard and mouse. Although I have experienced no other problems with it, I find that the F keys do not work, i.e. if I press F6, in order to curve a template, the pop-up does not appear and absolutely nothing happens.

Has anyone any thoughts please?

Regards

Brian Lewis

Hi Brian,

Some recent keyboards have a key which needs to be pressed first to change the F keys to normal behaviour. Otherwise they do something else -- such as changing music volume.

If both keyboards are radio, it's possible that they are interfering with each other. On some there is a switch underneath to change to a different channel. Have one on channel 1 and the other on channel 2. You need to change the switch on the receiver to match.

If you can't solve the problem, try these alternatives:

1. You can access all the Templot F functions via the menus -- see the action > mouse actions: menu items.

2. Or you can use the Windows on-screen keyboard -- just click the relevant buttons on the screen:

To launch the on-screen keyboard, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard from the Windows taskbar.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Brian

On the Microsoft keyboard, you need to press the "F Lock" key just above the numeric keypad to toggle the functions.  For normal operation, the "F" light on the wireless dongly bit (the bit that plugs into your USB port!) needs to be lit.

Hope this helps!

Microsoft keyboards "boot" with functions off - there is a large key key marked as F-Lock just above the number pad at the RHS of the keyboard (alongside the calculator button and directly above number lock). press it once and functions are enabled.

Hi Brian,

You'll notice that a wireless mouse eats batteries, especially if it's an optical mouse. Or at least mine does. :(  In these energy-conscious times remember that a wired mouse doesn't need a battery. I've gone back to a wired mouse on one of my systems. The sky hasn't fallen in. :) Admittedly I wasn't thinking especially green -- just dead batteries on a Sunday! Maybe rechargeable is the answer.

On the other hand, the Wacom mouse is wireless and doesn't need a battery. The problem there is that it needs its own mouse mat (tablet) which does have a wire, although I imagine there are wireless versions of those. The Wacom mouse also has another unique feature -- you can turn it round to face you and it still works normally. Ideal for arthritic fingers, you can click the buttons by rocking your wrist.

regards,

Martin.

Helped perfectly Paul. As I said to Martin, I probably could have figured this out for myself. But I am so unadventurous when it comes to computers........

But I have drawn and printed out two alternative track layouts for the naked and pristine new baseboard for Llaniog. ('Tis forty feet long and still growing).
