As I alluded to in a post on Singleton, the impulse purchase of a Dapol O gauge terrier in KESR blue livery has led to the development of a small layout, so that I can "play trains", as that day will be some time off for Singleton.

So, imagine the KESR had built the line from Northiam to Rye and included a triangular junction (as mooted for the Cranbrook extension), then my "mini-layout" enviages a platform just to the East of Northiam, where one leg of the triangle meets the KESR, which avoids two lines across the road at the station.

The other leg of the triangle, which provides for through running from Tenterden to Rye, is “off stage left” and has would have similar extensive facilities (!) to the West junction.

For signalling purposes, "Rother Platform (West) for Rye" is within the station confines of Northiam, so that the home signal control access to Northiam, but the railcar can run into the bay platform without “imposing” on the “main” line.

It's pre WW1, and the Pickering railcar is successfully operating a shuttle service from aforementioned platform to Rye, connecting with the Robertsbridge - Headcorn service, with the occasional "proper" train for market day etc...

By the way, the 2 x 1 framework was salvaged from my initial attempt to build Northiam (in 4mm scale) about 45 years ago, and is a proving ground for using plywood for Singleton's baseboards.

Baseboard joiners and bolts fitted - I also decided that, as this is meant to be a "quick" project so that I can "play trains", I will use Peco track - actually works out cheaper than buying components and building my own, but will need some adjustment to the templates.....

Hello Richard

Good to see you’re making progress. I’ll be very interested to see how the Peco track looks. I’ve always liked the proper bullhead look of it since I was a teenager.
Kind regards
Andrew

Richard

Many of those who build their own track use ready to run flexitrack, either for speed or as you have said economics. As for turnouts and crossings modellers forget Peco supply rail, plastic timbers and chairs which are competitively priced and far cheaper than their RTR counterparts and will alleviate the need to alter the templates

Peco do a fast Mail order service if you have no local supplier
