Not the best title but could think of anything else.

I'm modelling a junction shortly after it was rationalised resulting in the layout going from this:

Pre-1971.jpgPre-1971.jpg

to this:

1971.jpg1971.jpg

Immediately after rationalisation, most of the original timbers for the turnouts were left in place and it looked like this and it is something that I'd like to replicate on the model.

So, my question is, can I create a plan that has the timbering in place from the original plan above whilst showing the rails from the second plan?

Yes, make the active control each element of the replaced layout you wish to be represented by timbering alone, then hit Ctrl-O (for Orange) to bring up the 'omit rails and joint marks' dialog and click the button 'Invert all rail settings' - this will have the effect of leaving in place only the timbering for the 'replaced' formation.

Hi John,

You can have templates that consist of just the timbers if that is what you are asking ? Use the Real->Rails->No Rails menu option on any templates that you wish to omit the rails on. Switch between 'No Rails' and 'Head only' depending on if the rails are still in place.

Where is the location ? My bet is the North East....

The signal box design and those heavy duty wagons were the clues. Two type 2 diesels on a freight means a heavy load. Thanks John P.

Hi John,

As Rob and John have suggested there are several ways of approaching this.

You seem to have 2 options:

A. put the rails from your second plan over the timbering from your first plan. That's easy.

or

B. modify your first plan by removing individual rails as necessary to replicate the photo, with some of the original rails still in place. That's rather more work, involving some partial templates and careful study of the photo. Some crossings have been left in place, and others have been "plain-lined" by being replaced with plain rail. It's all doable in Templot if you want to do it.

That would make an interesting model. :)  It is (or was) a common sight on the prototype, but redundant pointwork is rarely modelled.

For option A:

1. load the original track plan.

2. real > rails > no rails menu item.

3. real > rails > modify group to match menu item.

4. answer group select all.

5. save a new file.

6. load the new track plan, replacing the original.

7. real > timbering > no timbering menu item.

8. real > timbering > modify group to match menu item.

9. answer group select all.

10. add back the file you just saved (files > recent files > add templates from a recent file... menu item).

11. save a new file.

For option B:

That's going to need a detailed reply and possibly a bit of video. I will reply again shortly.

p.s. I resized your rather large photo for a better fit on most folks' screens.

cheers,

Martin.
