After having a trawl through a few old books and CJ Freezer plan books, I decided to try and put one through its paces in Templot. I'm quite pleased with the result. Its based on a plan from one of his newer books, (newer as in 1992 ). Although he advocates minimum radii of not below 2' on the scenic and not below 18" in the hidden fiddle yard, I've managed to create the plan, albeit using an extra 6" of baseboard, with the tightest curve being 28", with only a diverging point road away from the mainline of 26.6". The lower fiddle yard has an extra road yet all but one of the curves are above 30" with some up around 40". |

second image of lower fiddle yard, albeit a rverse loop but seems to fit this plan well. Box files added below if anyone wants a better look.(oh by the way if you download the .box files on the scenic section there are currently 2 diamonds switched which should be double slips, yet to add them) (Also I apologise to anyone who doesn't like 'no name' name tags, I'm lazy) Kind regards Dave |

Hi Dave, always interested in any layout with gradients as they really do require a fair bit of planning. The safe minimum clearance for 00 stock is probably around 60mm and I note you had a run of 90" which equates to 2286mm. This is going to give a gradient of 1:38, not impossible but a little on the tight side. Really depends on what stock you are going to run. Diesel locos are generally much better with more weight and all wheel drives. I'm guessing but steam locos may be pushed with more than 4 coaches. At least the tight reverse curve would be down the gradient so that will make things slightly easier. Not sure if I have understood the plan correctly, but if the storage/fiddle yard roads are directly under the station and you only have 60mm clearance, how will you access the hidden roads? Of course increasing the clearance will make the gradient much steeper and that may limit stock movement even further. |

At least the tight reverse curve would be down the gradient so that will make things slightly easier.If the sidings at the bottom on the plan were moved a bit to allow the main line to continue round to enter a tunnel immediately under the terminus, then there would be a few feet more for a gradient which would either make the gradient easier, or allow a bit more headroom under the layout for hand access.
