I said that I would not be happy to let T3 replace T2 until there is full functional equivalence.

That's going to be easier said than done. Some things are far more trouble to implement than they are really worth, and will probably have to be let go. So this topic will be a record of such omissions.

One such is the ability to save images in GIF format in the file exports and also from picture shapes.

T2 supports both reading and writing of GIF files. But in Lazarus only reading of GIFs is supported. I suspect that relates to the old GIF patent restrictions. The GIF patents finally expired worldwide in 2004, so it just needs someone keen in the Lazarus project to get back on to it. They have had 15 years to think about it.

But it won't be me, because T3 is quite enough to be getting on with as it stands. :)

More about the TGIFImage component from its original author Anders Melander at:

  http://melander.dk/delphi/gifimage/

In T2 the GIF support is provided by the Sketchboard units, using the original 1999 TGIFImage as above. We can't use those in T3 because they are not open-source.

To summarise this, in T3 you can

1. Load a GIF image file as a picture shape, either directly or via drag-and-drop.

2. Load one anywhere else that we might choose to implement.

But in T3 you can't

1. Save a background picture shape image in GIF format.

2. Export an image file in GIF format.

3. Create a screenshot in GIF format.

Those things can be done in T2, but it is not too great a hardship without them in T3 -- if GIF format is essential, it simply means first exporting in some other format such as PNG, and then doing a conversion to GIF in any of the usual graphics editor programs.

cheers,

Martin.
