I am a newbie to Templot, so I'm working my way through some tutorials. Attached is a box file of my attempt to recreate PECO's new(ish) code 75 Bullhead points in 00. The PECO specs only give length 259mm; frog angle 12 degrees; and radius 1524mm. I appear to have the correct length and frog angle in my template, but the radius is not correct. For the switch settings I have used the "custom: 1:35 Peco-only" selection from the list. What do I need to adjust in my turnout to achieve a 1524mm radius? And which radius measurement does the PECO spec of 1524mm relate to? Is it nominal switch-curve radius or turnout-curve radius? Thanks Bob Fuller |

Hi Bob, Welcome to Templot Club. Templates matching the footprint of the Peco Large Radius turnouts can be downloaded from: topic 294 You have made a great job of converting the timbering and check rails for the bullhead versions. which radius measurement does the PECO spec of 1524mm relate to? That's Peco's quoted "nominal" radius, i.e. 60"/5ft. It is very "nominal" indeed -- it doesn't actually exist anywhere in the turnout. Quoting it exactly to the mm strikes me as very questionable. In fact it is a geometrical impossibility -- you cannot get to 1" offset at 12-degree swing in greater than 1162.24mm radius (45.76"), which Templot calls the "external geometrical radius" or substitution radius. That's the largest possible radius for Peco geometry, i.e. less than 4ft radius. cheers, Martin. |

Ah, thank you Martin. That explains the radius question then. Thought I was going mad. I even created a complete circle of PECO SLU1188 in AnyRail, and measured the diameter using their ruler function. It had an internal diameter of roughly 2430mm, so a radius of 1,215mm which is a lot closer to your figure. The 1524mm figure given by PECO is very misleading. |

The Templot Forum AND the "we've all made a circle of points in AnyRail and used their ruler to measure it" club. I congratulate you on your honesty at such an early stage.
