I find that when printing (to the same printer after it has been calibrated) during a session, the calibration has to be reentered for each printing.  Is there a way so that it can be done once for the first print and carry over for the other printings during that session?  Is there a way that the calibration for the printer can be entered once and then used without reentering it each time (assuming I am not using another printer) and that would carry across from session to session?

Hi John,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Once you have entered some printer calibration settings for a session, or loaded them from a CAL file, Templot should be using them for all subsequent printing on that printer in that session.

I have just checked this and it seems to be working fine here -- can you post your exact sequence of steps which is not doing this? Thanks.

What I have noticed is that if you use only the rapid print now! function instead of the normal printing functions in the output menu, the printer setup is not called and you do not get an opportunity to enter the calibration settings. I will have a look at that. In the meantime, before using print now!, please go to output > printer setup... to set up the printer and enter or load the calibration settings.

Between sessions you have the opportunity to save a CAL file for the printer, so that you don't need to enter the settings next time and can simply load them from the file.

Templot doesn't load the CAL files automatically because you may have several such files for any given printer, for different types and thicknesses of paper.

It's possible that the wording here isn't too clear:

What that means is "in this session, no calibration settings have been entered or loaded for this printer". If you saved a CAL file in the previous session, you can load the settings from it by clicking the blue bar.

I will change the wording to make it a bit clearer.

p.s. On some earlier versions of Windows, it is very important that the printer is switched on, recognised by the system, and working, before you start Templot. If you switch the printer on while working in Templot, it is a good idea to quit Templot and restart it before doing any printing. During startup Templot makes a list of the printers available on the system -- if the one you intend to use isn't available at that time, Templot won't have it in the list and won't have anywhere to save the calibration data for it.

cheers,

Martin.

Martin, many thanks for the quick response. I had used the print now feature and that is probably the problem. I will start using the output menu instead of the print now. In regard to that, after loading the previous calibration settings from the file "button," what pops up is the cal file and I hit open, then all went well. Would it be possible on the print now feature, if there is only one printer calibrated and in the file, that the print now feature would use that calibration by default?
Best wishes,
John

Hi John,

I'm having a think about that.

There is a significant problem -- using the wrong calibration data is likely to be 10 times worse than using the printer uncalibrated. Even if Templot finds some saved calibration data, there is no way of knowing that it applies to the very same unchanged actual physical printer that you are about to use. You may have obtained a new printer, or had an old one repaired. Folks could go on unknowingly using out-of-date calibration data for years.

The only way round this I can think of is the current one -- you saved the file, you know which printer you are using, Templot asks you what you want to do -- which file if any to load the data from.

Also of course, printers have moving parts which can wear and change over time. It's unwise to rely on a calibration done months ago if in the meantime the printer has had a lot of use. It's a good idea to clean fluff and dust out of the printer and do a fresh calibration from time to time.

Templot is a workshop tool, and like any tool it's for the user to remain in control of what it does. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Martin - good points. Question - do I have to click open on the calibration file or can I skip that step, assuming I have highlighted the file?
I'm still learning the program, but am able to genrate my track plans - it is absolutely terrific at coming up with accurate plans able to be used for tracklaying. It makes life a lot easier in many respects, even though the learning curve is a bit steep. I am very impressed!
Cheers,
John

Hi John,

Do you mean in the file selection dialog?

It's a standard Windows file dialog, so whatever way your system is set applies there too.

However, generally yes, you need to click the Open button. The dialog won't close until you have done that, or Cancelled it.

cheers,

Martin.
