I would like to replicate a GWR BLT in standard gauge that was built to Broad Gauge, something on the lines of Moretonhampstead. What would be the typical centre spacing of two parrallel lines after conversion to standard gauge i.e between the main platform and run-round loop or between two parrallel platforms?

Hi David,

Details of GWR baulk road track and pointwork is in issues 0 and 1 of Model Railway Journal.

The Broad Gauge Society is the place for the full chapter and verse: http://www.broadgauge.org.uk

It seems that the 6ft way between the tracks was standard even then (or 6ft-6in between the running edges on the GWR). So to find the track centre-to-centre spacing you simply add on the gauge:

7'-0.1/4" gauge + 6'-6" = 13'-6.1/4" centres (54.08mm in 4mm scale).

For other spacings simply add on the gauge difference, i.e. assume that the clearance from the near rail is the same as now.

regards,

Martin.

p.s. sorry David,

I didn't actually answer your question. :(

Outer rails of double broad gauge tracks = 7'-0.1/4" + 6'-6" + 7'-0.1/4"  =  20'-6.1/2" apart.

After conversion to standard gauge assume the outer rails between platforms remain in the same place. So to find the new track centres between platforms subtract the new gauge:

20'-6.1/2" - 4'-8.1/2" = 15'-10" new track centres spacing between platforms ( 63.33mm in 4mm scale).

For double track not between platforms I assume the inner rails would remain in the same place, so the centre spacing becomes the same as now, 11'-2.1/2" on the GWR and BR(W).

(11'-2" elsewhere.)

Unless someone knows different? :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the information. I do have a copies of MRJ No's. 0 & 1, although they are still boxed up after a house move. It will be some time before I start unpacking my Railway stuff, so I thought I'd make a start in planning my layout with Templot. I will no doubt have some more questions as I progress!

Regards

David
