Hi all,

I'm expecting delivery of a new laptop that has Vista pre-installed (try buying one with XP...) and I suspect doesn't come with Vista Disks (I think you have to create backup disks after delivery). Having searched this forum I'm under the impression that there may be some issues when running Templot with Vista (is this still the case Martin?)

I have a copy of XP Pro on CD that hasn't been loaded onto another machine. Can I partition the drive of the new machine and install XP onto the second partition, leaving Vista where it was? Can I then run Templot via XP somehow?  Has anyone tried this please, and is it straightforward? The last thing I want is for it to go horribly wrong on a new laptop....

Or shall I wait for Martin to Vista-ise Templot?

Thanks.

Brian.

Hi Brian,

As far as I'm aware Templot works fine on Vista as it stands. Have you tried it?

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply; I haven't tried it yet (still awaiting delivery).  I was going by the following posting:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/templot/message/9412

But if Templot runs ok with Vista then it's problem solved (it would have been nice if I could use TRAX too, but I understand that doesn't work and there's little chance of a Vista version being created). However, it was Templot I was interested in mainly, so if all is ok I'll leave things alone and just use Vista.

Best Regards,

Brian.

Hi Brian,

The full topic is here:

topic 173

My problem is that I don't have a copy of Vista, so I'm advising blind. I don't know of any reason why Templot shouldn't work on Vista, and there are numerous reports saying Templot is working fine on Vista. But also a few saying there were problems, although no coherent specifics.

If you are buying a new computer with Vista, and just follow through the usual Templot install without trying to change anything, I'm confident that all will be fine.

Templot is a single executable file which keeps itself to itself. If you have problems with that, I shudder to think what problems you will have with a typical Windows program which scatters multiple files all over the drive.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks Bill - that's good to know.  And I've just checked up regarding TRAX - It seems that I may have (wrongly) understood that TRAX & Vista wouldn't play together - it appears that they may be ok after all.

Once I've taken delivery of the new laptop I'll post an update  regarding both programs and advise further.

I just got an acer portable with vista ultimate. Only "benefit" seems to be movie wallpaper. Speed is slower and getting rid of the pre-installed Norton is tough.

On the major, major, downside, the very expensive latest autocad programs won't even install. You have to get the 64 bit versions instead. I've tried running Virtual PC which allows them to work, but doesn't pass through basic and critical stuff like my external mouse wheel zooming. And is a real pain to pass native files back and forth to.

I have a multi-boot Linux, win xp and win 98 on my main m/c. I'm going to do a Linus/XP install at on the Vista portable with XP as my main OS. The acer recovery OS is in a hidden partition on the second drive. So you should be able to do anything on the first drive, including reformat and set up your XP, and still be able to recover to the factory default vista (hopefully never)

MS is getting so much hassle from industry, over unnecessary huge switch-over costs, like the CAD situation, that it looks like XP will be kept alive for a few extra years.

Hi Andy -

Not sure were you got your AutoCAD info, but Autodesk seems to think it will work with 32-bit Vista: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=8446045

I run Templot on Vista, on a Mac, via Parallels 3, and have no trouble.
Vista is quite Mac-like...

That's the brand new ACAD 2009. It's only 2008 currently and I think that's why there is now 2009 a year early . . .

The message saying 2008 32 won't work with a 64 bit system is coming from the ACAD installer.

Hi

I have Vista running on both a PC and LapTop, I have experienced very few problems about compatibility, though it does take a little getting used to, but, then so did XP when that arrived.

I have Templot running on the PC and it works perfectly, I have the track Plan for Llanfyllin all sorted in P4 and have the templates printed ready to start laying.

Like Terry I am running Vista on both a laptop (Toshiba) and PC (HP). I have had no compatability problems with TEMPLOT (or 3rd Planit) on either machine.

Hi all,

Many thanks to all those who responded regarding the use of Templot with Vista. The new laptop was delivered today so I'll get to start playing with it (and Vista....) tonight.
