I am about to start laying track for my Southern Region based layout and as the most visable sections will be made from C & L parts I thought I would try and get it as right as possiable.

Was the straight track in 60' lenghts please.

Were the end sleepers in each section the slimmer plain track size or the wider pointh width.

Finally was the gap between the sleepers thinner at the ends where they joined or the same width please.

Hi John,

For the main lines of the Southern Region of British Railways, yes. For the Southern Railway pre-nationalisation rail lengths will have varied across the various constituent pre-grouping companies. Bear in mind that track on branch lines, and especially in yards and sidings, can go many decades between renewals. So you could expect to find older shorter rails in such places well into the BR period.

Were the end sleepers in each section the slimmer plain track size or the wider timber width?
12" wide joint sleepers were common in the pre-group period, but not usually with later 60ft rails in the BR period. They would then be standard sleepers at the rail joints.

Finally was the gap between the sleepers thinner at the ends where they joined or the same width please?
Rail joints always have the timbers closed up on each side of the joint. Usually to 24" or 25" centre-to-centre spacing. This applies equally to plain track and within pointwork. This is why ordinary flexi-track with fixed sleeper spacings often looks wrong.

Templot does all this for you. In version 082d* go to real > plain track options > rail lengths and sleeper spacings... menu item. Click the ? help button for some more detailed notes. There are three options for the 60ft rails, depending on the prototype radius. Our radii tend to be nowhere near prototype sizes, so I suggest you use the 25-sleepers per length setting for most places, and 24-sleepers only for dead straight track.

Templot will automatically create the closed up sleepers at the joints, and you can use the CTRL+F4 roll rails mouse action to get the joints exactly where you want them.

Or use the roll rails to match functions to adjust the joint positions on the current/control template to flow the rail lengths correctly across the template boundary to a background template. More details and screenshots about that at:

Scroll down to "new roll rails functions".

*in version 074b, go to geometry > plain track lengths... menu item.

regards,

Martin.
