While browsing YouTube I came across these. It's not often you find good image quality in close-up filming on there. This is 4mm scale. It's a shame the camera wasn't quite upright:

It would be worth bookmarking that for the next instalments. Does anyone know transmode1963? I've written to advise him of this message and invited him to tell us more about the layout.

Edmund Kinder has quickly replied with a link to his excellent web site about this layout:

He has promised to join us and say a bit more about the layout and trackwork. So we look forward to welcoming you, Edmund. :thumb:

Martin.

Hello Everyone

I'm flattered that my humble efforts have been given approval.

Basically, I started this project in 2001/2 as I managed to put a complete floor above my double garage at home (making sure adequate ventilation and insulation were installed too).

For those of you who have looked at my web site http://www.users.daelnet.co.uk/edmund/layout.htm
you will have read that the late David Jenkinson gave my layout his blessing and allowed me to use his Dent Head Junction trackplan.  It was he who suggested the name Grisedale, and it is real honour do do this.

The track used through most of the construction was from C & L Finescale along with their excellent templates.  The pointwork in the fiddleyard is constructed from SMP with copper clad sleepers.

The technique used with the C & L pointwork was the method put forwards by Iain Rice using ply sleepers with rivets.  After the trackwork had been wired and tested, the C & L chairs were cut into two halves and then inserted either side of the rail and held in place with a suitable plastic solvent.

Ballasting was with the usual method of putting the ballast on dry and then the mixture of water, PVA, and washing up liquid to hold it all in place.

The points on the scenic part of the layout are all operated by Tortoise motors controlled along with the signals from a lever frame from Model Signal Engineering with one slide switch behind each lever.

Issues and problems:  The first summer caused some of the pointwork to warp slightly due to expansion (even with lots of ventilation).  This was cured by opening some of the gaps between the rails.
I made all the pointwork in situ on the layout (some templates were modified).  However, this was quite difficult sometimes as I had to keep leaning over to get things right.  The pointwork on the fiddleyard was all made off the board and then put in place.  These examples are some of my best efforts.  I have one or two sets of points on the scenic section I'm still not happy with.

That's about it for the trackwork.  I've just used a lot of methods put forwards by others.  I am a member of both the ScaleFour and EM Gauge societies, but decided to build this in 16.5mm as I have a lot of stock with these back-to-back measurements.  This will be my last ever layout in 16.5 as i've already started my next EM gauge project.

I've got some holiday next month and one week is set aside for the layout.  After this, I will update the website (even now things have changed hugely from what you see on the site with a lot of the cardboard mockup hillsides replaced with actual models).  For the people who have subscribed to my videos, I will post some more on YouTube at the end of next month.

I am hoping to exhibit this layout in 2010.  However, I do spend quite a lot of time away from home with my job (I work for a Swedish optical networking company) so any spare time is a real premium to me.

Best Wishes

Edmund Kinder

They are no longer available, according to the site.

Hi John,

Sorry, that's a bug in the email link rendering from Templot Club.

John, may I urge you to visit the forum site instead of, or at least before, posting messages by email? You could then have watched the two videos there and then. They are still there:

4mm films

There's a link back to the forum at the top of every email from Templot Club.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Edmund,

Welcome to Templot Club and many thanks for taking the trouble to provide details of your layout and trackbuilding. It's quite rare to find close-up filming of finescale 4mm layouts, which is why I was delighted to find yours on YouTube. I'm looking forward to seeing the layout on the exhibition circuit in due course.

Riveted-plywood with cosmetic chairs seems to be falling out of favour, but I think it still has a lot going for it -- not least the fact that you don't spend hours with a bottle of pongy solvent right under your nose! :(  I know inserting the rivets is a bit of a pain, but then so is threading all those chairs onto the rail. At least with soldered construction you have a chance to get everything laid, checked, wired-up and working quite quickly. Adding the chairs can come afterwards and be left to the scenic department. :)

You mention the difficulty of leaning over to build track in situ because the C&L templates had been modified to fit. I won't mention a certain computer program with which you could have designed them to fit the location, and then printed identical copies for building in comfort on the bench. :)

Many members here will recognise your dilemma over existing 00 gauge stock and whether to go to EM or P4. Now that you have started in EM it won't concern you, but you may be interested to know about the 00-SF option (EM minus 2). This uses 16.2mm gauge with 1.0mm flangeways as in EM. The result is track with crossings which look and run as well as EM, but track which also accepts unmodified 00 gauge wheels. There has been a bit of a flurry of activity on that front today, with new pictures posted on RMweb from two 00-SF layouts. More info in the topic: topic 507

Many thanks again for the films and notes.

regards,

Martin.

Hi

For those that are interested, I've updated the website http://www.users.daelnet.co.uk/edmund/layout.htm
and added a few more up-to-date photographs taken today and put 16 short clips on YouTube (also filmed today). At the time of writing, I'm still uploading the last 4 clips.

Please note that this is my layout warts and all. There's still a huge amount to do and along with the fact that none of the locomotives have any headcodes (yet) and some still have their awful Bachmann/Hornby bedframe couplings, you'll see roofless buildings and un-dyed grass etc. Also, the Mark1 stock seen is straight out of the box and needs detailing and weathering etc.

As usual (I think with all of us in this hobby), I didn't get everything I'd planned to do this holiday but had a fair stab at moving it forward.

Best Wishes

Edmund Kinder

Very nice and nothing to be ashamed of too. If only I were as far along with my much smaller project, but real life has had a tendency to get in the way.
