I've got so far with making a d/slip, but have got myself rather confused. I have attached what I have done so far. Any help with the next stage would be most appreciated! I know it looks a little untidy, but thought I would ask anyway.

Many thanks

IMPORTANT

Hi Martyn,

Your .box file is seriously corrupted, and will cause Templot to crash. The data for several templates has been replaced with what seems to be a list of GWR signal boxes??? :?

So I've removed it from your message here on Templot Club. I will post a cleaned-up version later.

At present I don't know whether this corruption occurred before you posted it, or while uploading it from your system, or within the Templot Club database, or on my system after downloading. I strongly suspect the first or second, because I don't recall anyone ever posting a list of GWR signal boxes or attaching such a file, and I don't recognise the list as my own.

Please could you send it to me again as a direct email attachment to martin@templot.com ? I can then eliminate some of the above possibilities. Many thanks.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martyn,

Many thanks for sending me the file off-group. It's identical to the one you posted here on Templot Club, and the fact that you had problems with it in Templot means that the corruption occurred before you sent it. It looks as if part of the file failed to save correctly on your hard disk, leaving part of an old deleted file occupying a chunk of the file space.

However, since you say you don't have a list of GWR signal boxes, the mystery deepens! It is possible that another .box file or some other file or a web page link containing such a list is doing the rounds. In the file it looks like part of a database or spreadsheet file. How it came to be incorporated in your .box file is a mystery.

So in case anyone here recognises this, here it is converted to plain text:

Does that ring a bell with anyone?

I will post a cleaned-up .box file shortly, so we can get back to double slips! :)

It rings a bell with me - have you got "Signalbox" simulation on your machine?  It also uses .box extensions.

....  furthermore, I just had a look in the directory where my (freebie) copy of SignalBox is loaded and all the .box files have a pretty little yellow hat next to them...

And with names like StAustell.box there is obvious scope for disaster here.

Oh dearie me...

Good luck with that one...

Howard

Mmmmmmm, interesting development! I don't have Signalbox lurking anywhere, and definately not a list like the one that has unravelled from somewhere. Makes interesting reading though.

Martyn

It might be an idea to search for all .box file types and the you would see if there was rogue files?

I've done a search for all .box files, fortunately there were not a lot. I've looked at them all and all relate to what seems to be normal Templot files when opened. I have to admit though I am no computer Guru, much prefer to be a Guru in training on track building :)

Hello Chaps,

I also am more of a railway guru than a computer guru, but, I think that the issue might not be on your machine Martyn, nor with .box files per se.
Rather, somewhere on some  machine someone has an application (such as SignalBox) which believes "it" rather than Templot "owns" .box files and which therefore has felt free to write data into your file -  but I speculate that it could even have happen by someone double clicking on it from this forum.

Have a look here...

http://www.svrsig.org/diags/Diagrams.htm

and you will see why I think that SignalBox is somewhere at the root of this.  You may also feel that this is too much of a coincidence.

Best Regards,

Howard.

Sounds interesting. What pray, is 'Signalbox' simulation?

Hi Martyn,

I have cleaned up your corrupted .box file, and you can download it from:

Attached file: slip_for_martyn.box

(click link above with right mouse button, then select  Save Target As...  or  Save Link As... )

Here's a screenshot:

slip_for_martyn.pngslip_for_martyn.png

You were doing fine. The next task was to adjust the slip road plain track (template no.6) to line up with the slip switch at the far end (template no. 5). That has to be done manually using the F4 and F6 mouse actions. I have done it for you in the new file.

The tools > make slip road function is a little misleading in that regard. It doesn't do the whole job for you. :( It simply shortens the slip switch template to the end of the blade planing, and pegs on a length of plain track for use as a slip road. The task of adjusting that plain track to fit the actual formation you are building is left to you.

For those uncertain about the meaning of "slip road", here's the digram from the tutorial:

slip_road.pngslip_road.png

You now have a single slip. So your next job is to repeat the process and add the other slip road to form a double slip. Because this is a straight diamond-crossing, you could simply copy the existing slip road and switches, and peg them onto the other side. Or you can repeat the full process in the video if you prefer. See also the static tutorial notes.

Then comes the matter of the conflicting K-crossing check rails. Unfortunately a short 1:5.5 diamond with overscale EM flangeways is inevitably going to need some compromise on this.

There is some detailed discussion about this here.

The adjustments are at real > K-crossing options > K-crossing check rails... menu item. Read all the F1 and F2 help notes for the full words and music.

regards,

Martin.

Martin,

Thanks for helping me out with this one - a fairly simple enquiry opened a whole can of worms! I can at least look forward to dealing with K crossings and the like, much better than fiddling with PC's.

Do I have to do anything with my own copy of Templot, now that the problem is known?

Thanks again

Martyn
