Hello all

Not being shy to show my ignorance:

When one prints up a template there are little cross marks / dashes across each point blade. One is near the frog/vee end say 1/3 along, and another toward the point blade tip, say another 1/3 along.

I am making points using PCB for sleepers. They are not yet fully tested on a layout, but are each mounted on separate boards for ease of assembly. And they seem to be OK on simple rolling tests. 7mm scale by the way.

Now for the question - until now  I did not notice the small mark near the blade tips. I pivoted the blade on the mark closer to the frog/vee. Of course at times I get a quite long moving blade. Prototypically they look OK for me, as I'm trying to simulate simple trackwork as used by the Colonel Stephens...... what is the mark closer to the blade tips - should that be the pivot point? (giving me shorter moving blades?)  In which case what does the one closer to the vee signify?

Any comments or illumination tracking or pointing me in the right direction would be most helpful

Thank you

Robert

Hi Robert,

Here's a diagram showing the various marks:

switch_marks1.pngswitch_marks1.png

The upper turnout is an ordinary UK-pattern B-6 with a size B flexible switch.

The lower turnout has a 12ft straight loose-heel (pivoted) switch. If you are modelling Colonel Stephens trackwork then this is the type you should almost certainly be using. The suitable loose-heel switches are listed in the first group of switches at the template > switch options... menu item. There are Help notes on that dialog.

There is more discussion about these different types of switch in the

 0-14 topic .

Diagram key to the marks:

A = position of points (blade tips).

B = end of the planing (machining) of the blades -- the position where the rails diverge. This is an important mark because it is at this position that you must check and adjust the stock gauge during construction. For more discussion about this see the

 setting the stock gauge topic.

C = heel joint on loose-heel switch. This is the prototype position of the blade pivot. However, if you are using over-scale flangeways, you will probably need to make the blades longer in order to have a full flangeway clearance behind the open blade. The pivot is often made using short fishplates which are not fully tightened onto the rails, hence the term "loose" heel.

D = rail joint on flexible switch. This is a conventional solid fishplated rail joint at the end of the switch blade. For the next few timbers towards the blade tips the rail is held solid in the chairs, and beyond that it is free to flex.

E = rail joints in the stock rails.

regards,

Martin.

Thank you Martin, Wonderful reply.

It seems that I need to modify some of my points a little to give a shorter blade (i.e. less flexing) as I pivoted at D instead of C.  Of course the fixed fish plate at D should be insulating in the case of an all-metal (live frog) Vee.

Thanks again

Robert
