Hi guys, searched everywhere on the forum but can't find how to measure the distance between two turnouts approximately 9' apart on my layout plan.  Tried the ruler bar but can't see what it does.  I can guess using the pad grid or even print off the various templates full size, but feel sure there is a way of measuring between two points set up on a mouse click.

Grateful for your guidance.

The two points referred to in the title are points on a drawing, not the incorrect reference to a turnout....I'm learning. ;-)

Hi Gordon,

There are two methods. :)

Method A:

1. tools > ruler > show ruler menu item.

2. zoom in on first location.

3. ALT key + left mouse click sets the first end of the ruler at the mouse location.

4. zoom in on second location.

5. ALT key + right mouse click sets the other end of the ruler at the mouse location.

6. distance is shown at the second end of the ruler. You can change the units in the tools > ruler > menu options.

7. if the current/control template obscures the figures, press the HOME key to hide it.

For greater precision you can change the mouse pointer to cross-hairs. Press CTRL key + . (full stop).

You can also move the ends of the ruler into position visually, by mouse action.

More information about the ruler at: http://www.templot.com/martweb/pug_info_1.htm

On that page scroll down to "ruler tool" and click the info icon.
__________

Method B:

1. tools > jotter • X-Y read-out menu item.

2. ALT with left and right clicks as before, read the dimensions in the read-outs. You can store a sequence of readings on the jotter, add notes, and save a file containing them.

Press F1 on the jotter to read the help notes -- there's a lot of handy jotter functions.

regards,

Martin.
