Folks I'd like to invite you to pass critical analysis of my proposed layout Penrhos. It is to be a model of the real place (just west of Caerphilly) set in 1920. There are four lines operated by three companies. A composite scan of the local maps is attached. The intention is to model the whole area of the map westwards of the road bridge. The ANDR operated the E-W double track from Penrhos junction to the footbridge and it is almost level. The RR operated a parallel double track that becomes a single line. This line is on a falling gradient of about 1:80 from the viaduct becoming 1:40 further west. The Barry operated the other two lines from the junction with the Rhymney and the line over the viaduct. The viaduct line falls at about 1:80 to meet the exit from the exchange sidings.

The scale is P4 and the minimum radius is 36”, although some templates still say 1000mm. The intention is that on the scenic side there is no track closer than 12” to the baseboard edge. I have let this slip slightly in the odd place. Space is limited to 12’ x 26’ as this is the size of the garage. I have compressed lengths as necessary except between the road bridge and viaduct as I feel this area cannot be compressed without changing the geometry. Unfortunately the exchange sidings are shorter than I’d like. I’d prefer 2m for the shortest siding. I’ve also taken out one siding on each side. The inner of the sidings are shown as a relief loops on the signal box plan, but I doubt it was ever used as such. I haven’t drawn the fiddle yards yet except where it is necessary to get entrance tracks aligned.

Orange represents the downhill Rhymney section which loops under the fiddle yards, around the front of the layout still hidden as green rising to join the fiddle yards. The lowest part is 4” below datum. Red represents the Barry line over the viaduct (4” above datum). From the viaduct it will spiral down across the fiddle yards before entering the fiddle yard.

Comment please. Especially if you can see how I can increase the length of the exchange sidings. Thank you

PS My avatar is train of empties being banked up the ex RR in 1936 looking through the viaduct.

Awards for bravery come to mind!

However, people might find it helpful to look at your web pages: < http://hometown.aol.co.uk/randfspratt/PenrhosLayout.htm >

The best of luck with it!

From the little men in white coats? There are 3 of us building my layout; me myself and I.

Thanks John, I'd forgotten that page. If plans for the garage come to fruition that part of the layout is going to need a little adjustment to fit in.

There's also this page about Penrhos itself.

Good luck with this project Richard. Penrhos is a wonderful location - but you'll need a lot of stock!

AOL have shut down their hosting, do you have a new site yet? I'd like to show my father (Jonathan David, who thinks he knows you!)

I have a new website up and running and it shows two versions of how I might extend the layout.  http://www.Penrhos.me.uk   The ideas are either:

Penrhos_Version_1.jpgPenrhos_Version_1.jpg
or

Penrhos_version_2.jpgPenrhos_version_2.jpgpenrhos_version_2.jpgpenrhos_version_2.jpgPenrhos_Version_2.jpgPenrhos_Version_2.jpg

Thank you,
Richard
