Hi Martin,

Just tried to get into TC, only to be asked for a password............

I thought you were against this nonsense.

I haven't a clue what it is and why should I have to remember it each time?

******

Considering how quickly you reply to others, I felt that I was being snubbed by your failure to respond to my questions about saving files. Thanks for the discourtesy.

Hi Brian,

You actually wrote "What do others think?", so I assumed you were looking for comments from others, not from me. This is a multi-way forum for all, I can't possibly undertake to contribute to every topic myself.

But I hadn't forgotten your message, and I was intending to reply in due course.

I will write again shortly to explain about your password.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Brian,

Nothing has changed. This Templot Club forum is working in the same way that it always has done.

It is important to differentiate between access for reading of a web site's content, and write access to post messages or upload files to a site.

As far as reading is concerned, I am indeed critical of closed groups and forums where it is necessary to be a member in order to gain access. The whole of this Templot Club forum and the entire Templot web site is accessible to anyone anywhere in the world for reading and viewing, without restriction. The only exception to that is the private messaging system on the forum, for obvious reasons, and your member profile information.

But when it comes to posting messages and uploading files, it is essential to have some control over who is permitted to do that. Otherwise in no time at all the forum would be swamped with spam messages, hacker and virus links, and there is always the risk that someone would upload a recipe for home-made Marmite.

The situation is exactly the same on your Finescale group on Yahoo, where anyone can read, but it is necessary to be logged in on Yahoo with a user ID and password in order to upload files and pictures.

I haven't a clue what it is and why should I have to remember it each time?

You don't have to remember it -- your browser will do that for you. It will also tell you what it is if you have forgotten. Even if you have forgotten it and your browser hasn't saved it, there is a simple mechanism on the forum to get a new password.

But the forum cookie is valid for 5 years anyway. So provided you allow it to be set, you need to log in only once. After that you will be logged in automatically every time you visit Templot Club, until you log out or do something on your computer to cause the cookie to be deleted.

If you are using Firefox or Internet Explorer it is very simple. As soon as you type the first B of your user ID in the box, a list of your user IDs will drop down. You then click on "Brian Lewis" and Firefox will fill in your password for you. Then you simply click "Login" and you are set for 5 years hassle-free access to Templot Club.

This assumes that when you first logged in, you answered "yes" when Firefox asked if you wanted to have your password saved.*

If you have forgotten your password and you didn't get your browser to save it, it's easy to get a new one. Click this link (which is also on the Login dialog):

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/login.php?reset_password=1

You will then be sent instructions by email for creating a new random password which you can use to login. Once logged in using it, you can change it to something more memorable by going to My Account > Password.

If you have not only lost your password but also changed your email address, please let me know the new address and I can change it for you in the system, so that you can then use the above procedure to get a new password.

I would just like to repeat that you have to do all this only once. Thereafter you will be logged in automatically every time for 5 years, if you simply let your browser do that. (Or until you click "Logout" or change your computer.)

*Don't do this if you are accessing Templot Club on a public computer shared with others, and in that case be careful to click "Logout" when you have finished.

regards,

Martin.

It really is time you, Keith N and others stopped peddling this fallacy.

With today's activity, is is a wise precaution to 'wash' your data with one or other forms of spyware - CCleaner or similar, every few days. As soon as you do this, all retained passwords, cookies, etc. saved in Thunderbird are removed.

By the time I have done all this I guess I will have lost the will to live. There just has to be an easier way.

If you choose to keep removing all of your saved passwords, then there isn't much anyone else can do for you.  I also notice that you didn't respond to Martin's comment about the passwords you've set up for your Finescale group.  If you hate passwords so much, why isn't your group a free-for-all?

Incidentally, the real fallacy is that you have to "wash" your data every few days.  That is utter rubbish.  I mean, what sorts of websites are you surfing? :?

Cheers

There are no passwords as far as I am aware.

It is.

Well, not the - how shall I call them, 'light light' sites? All will be revealed in the new year, but there is something quite new to the UK coming to you, via C+L. I have been surfing countless sites in a so far vain, attempt to source three types of raw material, freely available in the US, but seemingly unobtainable here. The problem is it will not travel well, otherwise I would bring it in myself. (After years of 'blockade running', shipping embargoed goods ex the US for delivery to Iran, it would be a refreshing change to bring things in legally.....).

In fact I - and anyone else who has a contract with a Card Provider, will soon have to be looking more closely at the whole question of Internet Security. PCI DSS - Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, is on its way in and it appears that we must soon obtain accreditation - at a price of course, from an outside body. This is presumably similar to the steps taken to comply with BS EN ISO 2002 1994.

Oh no it isn't :)  To be able to post a message I need a password to log in as a member - through Yahoo Groups anyway.   This is (I believe) exactly the same as this forum - anyone can read, but you need a password to post.
