Hi Martin,

This is really nothing, but FYI.

I logged on to the forum about 9:30AM this morning (that is EST - 2:30PM your time). The forum recognized my log in and said "Welcome back Glen Suckling" . However I noticed that the tally at the bottom of the first page said that no one was in the forum (0 members, 0 non-members, 0 not shown).

I am sure that you have enough to worry about without insignificant curiosities like this.

Glen

Hi Glen,

Thanks for that. I had noticed this minor bug-let in the forum code but decided to do nothing about it until someone else noticed it too! :)

The forum software updates the user count after delivering the first page, not before. In other words to count as being "online" you must have received at least one page. While it is creating your first page you still haven't received it, so the count is still unchanged (zero in your case above). You would find after clicking to the next page (or doing refresh/reload) that the count updates correctly.

Now that you have mentioned it I will see if there is an easy-ish fix. If not I'm inclined to leave it as it is, although such illogicalities do niggle me out of all relation to their significance. :)

Most other web forums show an actual list of the members online, and this one can do that too. I suppressed it because it seems to me to be an invasion of your privacy to announce to the world that you are sitting in front of your computer at any given time. Thoughts anyone?

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
I agree with your point about privacy. However, this is a group that have self selected themselves in for good reasons. I would have no problem with any of them knowing I am on-line.

Regards

Raymond

Hi All,

I agree with Raymond. We are all members for the same sort of reasons, I assume. So I, also, have no objections.

Regards, Graham

Just to clarify -- the Templot Club pages are visible to the entire world, not just to members, and are cached by Google and web archive services.

What does knowing who's online actually do for anyone? I'm not bothered about whether or not the world knows I'm logged into the Templot forum because I can't see what difference that knowledge makes to them :)

Hi Paul,

It's not so much specifically Templot Club, but the fact that you are using your computer. Admittedly knowing that you were on your computer at 7pm last Wednesday doesn't tell anyone much.

But knowing that you are are always on your computer between x and y hours on a Wednesday may be interesting information to someone.

Not everyone wants to broadcast such details about their life to the whole world. I do my best to get all Templot users to join Templot Club (it's an uphill battle :) ), and I don't want to give anyone a reason for not joining.

regards,

Martin.

I agree with Paul.

Just becaause I seem to be on line, it does not necessarily mean I am at home - I might be using my laptop from somewhere else.
