Hi Martin/guys,  couple of questions on timber numbering.  When do they change?  I sent of a dfx file for printing and got the print back today.  I needed to align the new plan with parts of an earlier one, so printed a small section of the plan from the box file, which aligned with a specific point in the room.  When I went to align this with the new dfx print, I noticed the timber numbers had changed.  I don't think I have changed anything in the original box file so was a little surprised to see the timber numbers were different in the dfx file.  Perhaps I did change something and can't recall it, but would be interested to understand the logic.

Also wanted to see timber numbers on the screen, so went to pad, pad options, show timber numbers and the egg cup came up but nothing appears to have changed on the screen.  Any ideas?

One other thing Martin, before I forget.  When printing a large plan, I'll often skip rows to reach a particular section.  Is it possible to add a previous row button as sometimes I miss the row I want and then find you can't go back.  You have to cancel the print and start again.  Is that possible or is there a way to go back that I have missed?

Hi Gordon,

er.., they don't change. :? However, the first part of the timber number (before the dot) is the template number in the storage box, so if you have changed the number or order of templates (deleted all the unused ones, perhaps), this part of the timber number will change. Deleting any template to current/control, modifying it, and storing it again also re-numbers all the templates below it in the box.

If you mean the part of the number after the dot, the only thing I can think that would change the numbering unexpectedly would be to swap a plain track template end-for-end. The numbers always start from the CTRL-1 end. Lots of other template changes affect the numbering of course, but you would know that you had made them.

I can't reproduce any numbering mismatch between a DXF and a native Templot screen -- if none of the above explains what's happening perhaps you could send me the DXF and BOX files so that I can investigate? Thanks.

Also wanted to see timber numbers on the screen, so went to pad, pad options, show timber numbers and the egg cup came up but nothing appears to have changed on the screen. Any ideas?
pad > pad options for the control template > show timber numbers menu item puts the numbering on for the current/control template only. If the current/control template has been hidden, you won't see any change. Press the HOME key to show it again.

If as I suspect you wanted to see on screen the timber numbering for the background templates (as on the DXF print), that's at pad > pad background options > pad background templates detail... menu item, and then tick the box for timber numbering.

(None of this will have any effect unless timber numbering is being generated, i.e. currently ticked on in the generator settings.)

The "egg-cup" is in fact the egg-timer? :) (Officially it's called the "hourglass"). It shows while the screen is being refreshed with the numbering -- for a large plan like yours that might take a second or two. If you mean it remained showing with Templot not responding -- pass. :( Perhaps Windows needs a kick? Close a few other applications if running and re-start Templot.

No, you haven't missed anything. Because of the way printing works, a "previous row" button is quite tricky to implement -- otherwise I would have done it before now as I too have sometimes wanted a way back. :)

I'll have another look and see if I've missed something obvious. A "reset" button to start the page count again at the beginning may be more feasible -- it would be better than cancelling the dialog completely.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks as always Martin. Now I can see what has happened...

I was trying to read the whole number, not realising how the number was constructed.  Looking at the numbers after the dot now makes sense.  What was confusing on the box file print is that the template number had changed and the timber numbers were parallel to the rail, running into each other and being shortened, hence the confusion.  Is there a way of turning them at right angles to the rail so the whole number can be read?  Thought it strange..:D

I hadn't been posting my layout updates here as it was starting to move away from Templot.  Happy to do so, if you feel it is of interest.  I was chuckling to myself last night as the complete plan broke through the 2mb file ceiling that was mentioned on another thread.  You can never have too much track..:D

Martin.

I'm looking forward to the net Pug. Can't wait for the Diagram Mode. That'll save a lot of time.
