I'm sure this has been covered before but searches on jpeg and screenshot have failed to throw out the answer.  I have been asked to show my track plan by various people either on RMWeb or just emails between friends.  How can I take a simple screenshot in jpeg format that can be sent by electronic mail?  Clearly it can be done as I have seen screenshots appear in the railway modelling press and in this forum.  Can someone please tell me how it's done?

Many thanks.

Hi Gordon,

1. Arrange your screen as required.

2. Press the PrintScreen key on the keyboard -- it's usually just to the right of F12. (It would be far more logical called "Copy Screen" because that's what it does, but some things are beyond human understanding. :) It doesn't print anything.)

3. Start your favourite picture editor program or Windows Paint.

4. Click Edit > Paste.

5. Save the image -- but NOT, please not, in JPG format. JPG is totally unsuitable for screenshots and computer graphics, and will produce the largest file size and worst possible image quality. JPG is intended for real world images captured with a lens (from cameras and scanners).

Save instead in GIF or PNG format. Ideally first reduce the colour-depth to 8-bits and then save in PNG format. This gives the minimum file size and a perfect reproduction of your screen.

p.s. ALT+PrintScreen is useful to copy only the active window, instead of the full screen.

regards,

Martin.
