I am a new owner of Templot and have spent a couple of weeks getting to grips with almost all of the features.  However, I have hit a problem and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.  I feel I may be posting this in the wrong section as I'm not sure it's program related.  However it is frustrating.

A couple of days ago, my PC started cutting out for no apparent reason and switching itself off.  I was told it may have been caused by the CPU overheating.
To complicate the situation, this happened during a save operation and managed to corrupt the HD to a point where I found it necessary to re-format the drive, and re-install windows.  Whilst the machine was switched off, I also removed and cleaned the CPU and renewed the heat sink compound before continuing.
After I had put most of my main software back on the drive, I re-installed Templot.  When the opening screen appeared I entered my release code and... Panic.   A window appeared and told me this was the 'wrong PC'  and was an Invalid Request.   I tried again then uninstalled, reset and re-installed v0.74.   I then noticed the internal reference number was different to the one I originally used to register the program.  I tried v0.82d which generated an entirely different number and v0.91c which simply wouldn't run.

I am puzzled because I always thought the internal reference number which is used to create the unlock code,  is unique to the CPU.  After an enquiry to the local computer shop I was told a re-installation of windows can alter this number.

Apart from the re-installation, the system is the same.  I run Windows XP-pro, with a dual-core 64bit AMD 3Ghz CPU and 2 Gb of RAM.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on?   My own thoughts at this time is that the CPU is fried.

Hi Stan

The internal reference code is unique to the format of the hard drive, so if you reformat you lose the code, as you've found.  I'm sure Martin will give you a new unlock code.

As far as the overheating problem goes, if you have a "marginal" PC with regard to temperature, Templot can cause problems.  The mouse actions can use as much CPU power as is available - in fact I used Templot as a test program when experimenting with CPU cooling.  I don't know what brand computer you have, but most will be built with the absolute minimum cooling they can get away with which is fine for general office use, but not so fine with programs such as Templot that work the CPU hard.

By the way, if you reinstalled and all is fine except for your lock code, the CPU isn't fried, but given what it's been through I would replace it and fit the biggest heatsink you can physically get in the case.

Hi Stan,

If you need a new lock-release code, please just email me.

If your system is overheating when running Templot, go to the control > control room (or the main > program panel) menu item.

On that window, click the program > expert > cpu usage > allow full idle (slow) menu option. That option isn't saved, so you would need to change it each time you start Templot.

It would be best to find out why the system is overheating. The small fan on the cpu itself may have stopped working or become clogged with fluff. Likewise the fan (if any) on the graphics card.

regards,

Martin.

Thank you both for the comments Paul and Martin.  :thumb:
Santa has been good to me this year.  A new AMD 6000 chip with a monster heatsink, including about 1 kg of copper rods in the refrigeration unit, and a new power unit with a body width (6 inch) cooling fan.  That should solve the heating problems.   I have reformatted/re-partitioned and things look better already.  The PC has been running for 72 hours without a glitch now the BIOS has full control over the fan units.

Martin, I will be in touch in the next couple of days when I get the rest of my software installed and I convince myself the problem is not being caused by another area of the system or is likely to happen again.

Compliments of the Season to you both.
