Being cut off from civilisation and having had no postal or carrier collections and deliveries in two days, yesterday I loaded the 4x4 with three sacks of parcels and drove 5 miles of ungritted roads, to the nearest post office. Last night Mrs. L looked out of a first floor window and said, "Your tyre tracks have created a workable layout plan". It was true - a passable plan with double tracks, a crossover and some sidings where I had backed the vehicle. Beats making snowmen...... Regards Brian Lewis |

Hi Brian, The snow storm in the UK made our news programs here. How much did you get? In Oswego county we just passed the 200 inch mark for this winter. No real storms so far - just "lake effects" from the winds crossing Lake Ontario. The difference of course is that we are equipped for it. I hate to think of the chaos that a decent snowfall can cause on the roads in the UK, and to the 3rd rail systems. You can always stay indoors and build trains until it melts. Glen |

Hi Glen, This is Somerset, where is is said, "The air is sweet, the people are pure and only the bookmakers are vile". I live on an inlier, 470 feet above the surrounding lands, (which are mainly peat moors) and here it is usually 2-3 degrees cooler than the surrounding land. But even so, 1994 was the last time we had snow here. Normally the ponds in my grounds never have even the slightest film of ice. 200 inches? I am grateful for your willingness to accept it. Much more fun than a CaterpillarHi Nigel, For four years I did work for TML when they were building the Channel Tunnel, keeping the Schoma and RFS locos running. When construction had finished, I could have purchased the Hunslet rack railway that served the adit for little more than scrap value. I did think seriously, but never did anything about it. Pity - a 90cm rack would have made an interesting 'garden' railway. Regards Brian Lewis |
