Hi All,

I'm in the process of planning a model of Wolverhampton Low Level "laying" track over the 1919 OS map of the area.

It's proving challenging and rewarding to use Templot, and it gives a real sense of achievement when you finally get a complex formation to work and align correctly - particularly as I know it mimics the prototype exactly.

My question after many false starts and mistakes is really in regard to where one should start to plan from.

In relation to the photograph attached - I started from the tunnel mouths and basically worked back towards where the camera was. I ended up with lots of templates that needed "joining" and as a result had to jigger about a lot with make transitions etc. some of which could not be calculated.

I was wondering do others have a strategy on where to start, from the middle and work outwards, end to end etc.?

Interested to hear (read!) what others think.

Regards,

Jim

I guess it does not really matter which end (or middle you start from. Given the GWR's penchant for "flowing" trackwork, I suspect you are going to have to quite a lot of playing with templates to get it right.

It may be worth while checking that the 1919 OS map does in fact agree with your photograph(s). The rather splendid one attached to your message is somewhat later, I think.

Of course the prototype would never have had a bridge over twin tunnels! :-)

Best wishes
John

Wonderful, where did you get the OS map from?  Bearing in mind that I don't live in the UK, please be nice about a reply.:D

One of the things I REALLY like about templot is the ability to setup a complex formation that involves transition curves, slewing etc. by getting the basic curvature in plain track (or just centre lines) and then roaming turnouts down the length, adjusting each as it comes into position.  Martin (mark 1) posted a video recently that illustrates this.  It looks like that might help with this track formation.

John's comment about the GWR's penchant for curves proves that nobody that models the GWR should be without Templot:cool:

Hi John,

Thanks for your comments - I suspected there is no "right way" but as a former process and production engineer I'm always looking for the most efficient (lazy!) route.

You are right, the photo is from some time in the '50s - but in fact the plans do line up. There was a minor adjustment around 1926 when they took out a turntable and also removed a crossover from one of the centre roads through the platforms, but apart from that it pretty much seems to have remained as per the photo until closure.

The photo did highlight that what I thought was a double slip, is in fact an outside double slip, so I've got one of those plus another 3 single slips to build. All as you say constructed on a flowing basis so it should be quite a challenge to build it!

Kind regards,

Jim

Hi Martin,

I totally agree with your sentiments about roaming along the length, this is what I had been doing to create my own formations.

As for the map I "googled" for old maps and got it from a site called mapquest.com if I remember rightly. I gave the guy the exact co-ordinates and explained what I wanted and he centred it exactly on the station for me. In fact I think he was a bit of enthusiast himself when I explained what I wanted it for.

I can post it here if it doesn't infringe any copyrights?

Regards,

Jim

Jim,

I would look very carefully at anything you have to see what the copyright is before posting it on a public forum, that said I would love to see it.

I can believe that you found the location from mapquest.com, but not that you got a hard copy OS map from them.
